Philadelphia University offers undergraduate and graduate programs in over 40 areas of study.  The curriculum offers an education in the liberal arts within a career-development framework.  The over 3,000 pupils studying at Philadelphia University represent over 30 states and 30 countries.

Students choose from over 60 areas of studies in three colleges, College of Architecture and the Built Environment; the College of Design, Engineering and Commerce; and the College of Science, Health and the Liberal Arts.  The university, which began as a technical college in 1884 has gone through many changes, including a merger and separation with the Philadelphia Museum and now has a satellite campus in the Bucks County area of Pennsylvania.

Online Nursing and Health Care Degrees Review

Though a distance-education program, the Midwifery institute encourages hands on participation, and strives to give nurses as much quality hands on education and experience in addition to theoretical knowledge, which is developed through online courses.

Online Master’s Degree in Nursing

Though online, the online Master’s Degree in Nursing Midwifery at Philadelphia University offers a community-based approach to learning, including monthly real-time tutorials and intensive, campus-based learning experiences. Traditionally midwives are trained health professionals that assist women in the birthing process, and today focus not only on women’s health, but also women’s health and pre and post partum care in general. The program is for Registered Nurses (RNs) with bachelor’s degrees seeking to become midwives.  Graduates of the program may sit the exam to earn the CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) or CM (Certified Midwife) credential awarded by the American Midwifery Certification Board.  Courses in the program include:

  • Healthcare of Women
  • Antepartum, Intrapartum and Postpartum Care
  • Embryology and Genetics
  • Advanced Pharmacology
  • Health Policy
  • Introduction to Clinical Administration

Duration and Cost

Program duration is 2 years of full-time study or 3 years of part-time study.  Tuition is $737 per credit hour.  The program is a total of 65 credits with thesis.

Online Certificates in Nursing

For nurses who already hold a masters degree in nursing, an online Post-Master’s Certificate in Midwifery is offered for educational advancement.  The course includes the same courses as the master’s degree program, with the exception of the following:

  • Introduction to Health Policy
  • Critical Inquiry I
  • Critical Inquiry 2
  • Master’s degree program  elective

A degree-completion program is also offered to current midwives who seek to update their skills and educational knowledge.

Duration and Cost

Tuition is $737 per credit hour, and the program can be completed in approximately 2 years.  The completion program can be completed in just three to four terms. The program is between 50-55 credits.

Things to consider:

  • Campus-based, intensive study sessions are occasionally required.
  • Master’s program is full-time or part-time
  • Students wishing to earn a bachelor’s degree in addition to the master’s have the option of attending a campus-based program
  • Programs are not accredited by a nursing body
