The University of Pittsburgh is one of the oldest and most traditional colleges in the United States. Originally founded in 1787 as a small private school in a log cabin, the University of Pittsburgh has grown to 4 regional campuses with over 30,000 students.  Education, engineering, social work, business and information systems are a few of the subjects that students can study.

Online Nursing and Health Care Degrees Review

Online Master’s Degree in Nursing

The Masters Degree in Nursing Clinical Nurse Leader specialization allows students to gain the experience and skill necessary to function as a nurse across a wide spectrum.  Students are expected to participate in the rich online learning community available to them, and face-to-face sessions may be required.  Online learning at the University of Pittsburgh offers opportunity for discussion, problem solving, critical thinking, research, and community building.  Students may attend classes on the main campus, and also participate in an online information session.  Courses include Healthcare Outcomes, Research for Evidence Based Practice and Advanced Pharmacology.

Duration and Cost

 The program may be completed in two years on a full-time basis.  It is also an option to study part-time.  Tuition is $11,006 and $12, 694 per term for Pennsylvania residents and non-residents respectively.  The program requires 2-3 terms per academic year.

Online Doctoral Degree in Nursing

The post-masters online Doctor or Nursing Practice program is available only to nurses who have completed a master’s degree. Additional doctoral programs include PhD’s in nursing are available on the University of Pittsburgh Campus.  The program offers the following nine specializations:

Online Continuing Education Courses in Nursing

The School of Nursing offers several online continuing education courses for nurses to maintain compliance with state requirements. Courses range from 1.5 to 6.5 continuing education credits and have registration fees from $30 to $130 per course.  Course currently are offered are:

Things to consider:

  • In some cases clinical practicums may not be available in a student’s local community.
  • Verify your state is not listed in the state restrictions list for online degree programs.

Accreditation

Nursing programs at the University of Pittsburgh are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.  The master’s and doctoral level degree programs are also accredited by the Council on Accreditation.  Continuing education courses are accredited by American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
