Students interested in pursuing careers in the nursing field have many options for programs at the Community College of Beaver County. Ranging in intensity from a Nurse Aide program to the Associates in Nursing Degree that allows a graduate to seek licensure as a registered nurse, the nursing programs at CCBC allow students to seek various careers in the medical field.

Nurse Aide

A Nurse Aide provides direct care to patients including assisting them with daily life activities such as bathing and eating, or very simple health care services. These workers work under the supervision of other nurses to fulfill necessary responsibilities associated with the health and well-being of each patient. This program is designed to be completed in a single semester. This gives successful students the opportunity to seek employment in hospitals, nursing homes and as direct care relationships in patients’ homes in a very short period.

Practical Nursing

A Licensed Practical Nurse provides basic medical care for patients in various settings. Working under the direct supervision of a physician, registered nurse or dentist, LPNs engage in simple diagnostic and planning procedures as well as basic medical tasks to provide nurturing care. The LPN program can be completed in one year with a total of 50 credits. The three semesters include general education and nursing courses in the form of classroom-based lectures and clinical experiences. Successful completion of this program prepares students to take the licensing exams necessary to seek employment in the professional field.

Associates in Nursing Degree

A Registered Nurse is prepared to fill leadership and more intensive healthcare roles in a variety of medical facilities and situations. These nurses work more independently, though still with supervision, to provide a more thorough degree of care to patients and engage in the creation of treatment plans. The RN program is comprised of a total of 70 general education and nursing credits over a period of two years. The five semesters include a variety of teaching and experience styles and opportunities. Graduation from this program prepares students to take necessary licensing exams and provides an educational foundation for pursuing advanced training in the form of Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees as the graduate wishes.
