Oklahoma City University Nursing School Review

Oklahoma City University (OCU, OKCU) is a large doctoral university offering bachelor’s through doctoral degrees. Founded in 1904 as Epworth University in the Methodist tradition, Oklahoma City University has grown considerably. Oklahoma City University offers over 72 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 3,500 students. Oklahoma City University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools’ Higher Learning Commission.

Nursing Programs

The Kramer School of Nursing at Oklahoma City University offers bachelor’s through doctoral programs for nurses. The BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing) and MSN (Master of Science in Nursing) programs are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).

Oklahoma City University Undergraduate Nursing Programs

Gateway Education

The Gateway Education program at Oklahoma City University is an undergraduate nursing program leading to a BSN degree in nursing. Admission requirements for the Gateway Education BSN program include a minimum 3.0 GPA, a minimum grade of C in science courses and English proficiency. When applying to the BSN program, students should have no more than 9 general education courses remaining. A unique feature of the Oklahoma City University BSN program is that a separate application the Kramer School of Nursing or nursing program is not required for admission to the BSN program. Students can complete the nursing program, part-time, full-time or on an accelerated schedule. The BSN program can be completed in as little as 16 months. Upon completion of the Gateway Education BSN program, students will earn a BSN and are eligible to take the National Council for Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses, NCLEX-RN, to become a Registered Nurse (RN).

RN to BSN (Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing)

Registered Nurses (RNs) seeking to complete a four year degree may enroll in the RN to BSN degree program at Oklahoma City University. Admission requirements to the RN to BSN program include a minimum GPA of 2.5, an active RN license and graduation from an accredited RN program. Applicants to the nursing program who are not native English speakers are required to demonstrate English proficiency by earning a TOEFL English score of 500 or higher. Most students are able to complete the 30 credits required for the RN to BSN program in two semesters. Students may be required to take additional courses if degree requirements are not met. Upon completion of the program, RNs will earn a BSN.

Oklahoma City University Nursing Graduate Programs

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

The Kramer School of Nursing offers two master’s tracks for students interested in pursuing a MSN degree-Nursing Education and Nursing Administration. Admission requirements to the MSN program include a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a BSN from an accredited institution. The MSN program can be completed in 18 months for Nursing Education majors and 24 months for Nursing Administration. Upon completion of the graduate nursing program, students receive an MSN degree.

RN to MSN (Registered Nurse to Master of Science in Nursing)

Registered Nurses with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing may enroll in the RN to MSN program. Admission requirements include holding a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. General education prerequisites for the MSN program are generally met through the bachelor’s degree, though students are required to take 3 BSN level courses before beginning the MSN program. Upon completion of the RN to MSN program, students are awarded an MSN degree and do not receive a BSN.

BSN to DNP (Bachelor of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice) Family Nurse Practitioner

The BSN to DNP Family Nurse Practitioner program prepares nurses with a baccalaureate degree to become licensed FNPs (Family Nurse Practitioners). Admission requirements to the program include a minimum 3.0 GPA, BSN from an accredited institution and a personal statement indicating how the BSN to DNP program will assist the nurse in achieving future goals. The BSN to DNP Program can be completed in as little as 3 years, though there are limits on the number of courses that can be taken each semester depending on the applicant’s clinical background. Upon completion of the program, students receive the DNP degree and are eligible to take the FNP certification exam.

DNP Completion Program

The DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) Completion program is for nurses with a master’s degree. Nurses may choose from a Clinical or Administrative focus depending on their background. Nurses in the clinical DNP track should have a practical certification such as anesthetist or nurse practitioner. Nurses in the administrative DNP track should have leadership experience and a nursing administration certification. Designed with the working nurse in mind, the program can be completed in 21 months.

Doctor of Philosophy Nursing Program (PhD)

Kramer School of Nursing’s PhD in Nursing program prepares nurses for a career influencing education and research at the local, state and national level. The PhD program has a focus on Nursing Education, though students may choose a different focus. Admission requirements to the nursing PhD program require students to have either a BSN or MSN with a minimum 3.5 GPA. The nursing PhD program may be completed in approximately four years.
