Southern Oklahoma Technology Center Nursing Program Review

Southern Oklahoma Technology Center (SOTC) offers career and vocational education programs in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Branch campuses are located in Sulphur and Healdton. The center was founded in 1966. Southern Oklahoma Technology Center was one of the first technology centers in rural Oklahoma. Over 500 students participate in Southern Oklahoma Technology Center’s career programs.

The center recently received a Quality Commitment Award from Oklahoma Quality which recognizes organizations and businesses dedicated to excellence in organizational practice. A Business and Industry Services Center (BIS) provides training services to companies that have relocated near the campus. Southern Oklahoma Technology Center is accredited by the Oklahoma Board of Career and Technology Education.

Nursing Programs

The Practical Nursing program at Southern Oklahoma Technology Center is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. Practical Nursing and nursing certificate programs are offered at the college.

Southern Oklahoma Technology Center Nursing Certificate Programs

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Program

Students in the Practical Nursing program earn up to 30 academic credits in the field of health sciences through Murray State College. The LPN program is composed of classroom, laboratory and clinical training. Students enrolled in the program must dedicate a minimum of 16 hours per week towards progression in the LPN program. Admission requirements stipulate students must be at least 18 by the time of clinical rotations and have a satisfactory score on one of three standardized tests-the COMPASS, ACT or TABE. Prerequisites to beginning the program include a CPR certification for Healthcare providers awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA). The LPN program can be completed in 1463 hours and a maximum of 2 years. Preference for admission into the LPN program is given to local students. Upon completion of the program, students receive a certificate and are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN, National Council for Licensure Exam for Practical Nurses, to become an LPN.

Nursing Assistant (Therapeutic Services Pathway)

Through therapeutic services pathway, students can earn qualification as a Nursing Assistant. In the Nursing Assistant program, students will learn medical terminology, CPR and skills necessary to support LPNs, RNs and other healthcare professionals in health care settings. The Nursing Assistant program requires 496 hours of study. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the exam to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA). As with the LPN program, students have the opportunity to earn academic credit through college partnerships.

High School Admissions at Southern Oklahoma Technology Center

As with several other technology centers in Oklahoma, Southern Oklahoma Technology Center partners with several high local high schools to offer certification opportunities to local high school students. High school students have the opportunity to earn a vocational certification while simultaneously attending high school. Some programs, such as the LPN program require students to be of a minimum age before working in a hospital or other healthcare setting providing critical care to patients.
