Southwestern Oklahoma State University Nursing School Review

Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) offers associate’s through doctoral degree programs at its campus in Weatherford, Oklahoma. The university was founded in 1901 as a normal school offering training and preparation for college coursework. Southwester Oklahoma State University also has a campus in Sayre, Oklahoma. Over 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students are educated Southwestern Oklahoma State University each year. Southwestern Oklahoma State University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Nursing Programs

The BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing) degree program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The School of Nursing offers both traditional and completion BSN programs. The School of Nursing was established in 1976 and is the self-proclaimed first rural BSN program in Oklahoma.

Pre-Nursing

The Pre-Nursing program is offered at the Sayre campus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University. The Pre-Nursing program prepares students for further study in nursing at the associate’s or bachelor’s degree level. Upon completion of the program, students will earn an AS (Associate of Science) in General Studies with an emphasis in Pre-Nursing studies.

Traditional BSN Program

The BSN program is a four year program, in which students apply separately to the university and nursing program. After completing two years of general education coursework, students apply to the BSN program. Admission requirements to the BSN program include a minimum 2.25 overall GPA, completion of perquisites with a grade of “C” or higher and a satisfactory score on the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills). Students are able to challenge coursework in the BSN program through examination. Up to 31 credits may be challenged to receive credit in the BSN program. Upon completion of the BSN program, students receive a BSN and are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN, National Council for Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses, to become a Registered Nurse (RN).

Degree Completion RN to BSN (Registered Nurse to Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing)

The RN to BSN is a 30 credit program that allows RNs to earn their BSN by building on previous education and career experience. Admission requirements to the RN to BSN program include graduation from an ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing) or diploma program accredited by a nursing body (NLNAC or CCNE-Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education). Other requirements include an RN license and a minimum 2.25 GPA in previous coursework. Courses in the RN to BSN program are delivered online. Upon completion of the undergraduate program, students earn a BSN. Students have up to five years to complete the RN to BSN program.
