Kent State University – College of Nursing

Kent State University provides a great nursing program wherein professional administrators and faculty members help students improve their educational and professional success through individual advising, guidance, program planning and clinical experiences at various healthcare facilities around the state.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Since 1971, this program has prepared students for the healthcare delivery system through clinical and class instruction. This program takes four years to complete and is offered at the regional campuses in Geauga, Stark, Trumbull, and Salem, as well.

To apply, students will need to have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75, and a grade of at least C in certain courses.

Accelerated Nursing Program

To apply for this program, students will need to meet the same admission requirements as other students, as well as have a baccalaureate degree in any program. Students with extracurricular, class-related, volunteer or job-related experience will be given higher consideration for admission.

Registered Nurse to Bachelors of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN)

This online degree program exists for registered nurses (RNs) who want to get a Bachelor’s of Science in nursing, advance in nursing and improve themselves in healthcare altogether.

Online Traditional RN-BSN Curriculum

This program teaches RNs all about disease risk reduction and prevention. Students will need to complete 11 nursing courses and electives in seven weeks, but students have six admission dates to choose from and can either do part-time study or full-time study.

Online RN-BSN Degree with Health Informatics

Students now have the option to choose a specialized field in this program: health informatics. In a nutshell, health informatics refers to a science that focuses on how to capture, analyze and manage health information as applicable to patient care improvements.

Online RN-BSN Degree with a Public Health Certificate

The Public Health Certificate integrates important aspects of disease prevention and health promotion. Students who complete this program will understand public health issues more and will be prepared to practice in community health and public health positions.

Online RN-BSN/MSN Degree in Nursing Education

With this program, students can get a BSN degree while getting credits for an MSN degree at the same time.

Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (ADN Program)

Graduates of the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program are awarded the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AASN) degree upon successful completion of the course. This ADN program requires 71 credit hours that combines both nursing education and liberal education courses. It can be completed in two full-time years.

Licensed Practical Nurse to Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (LPN-ADN)

To apply for this program, students need to be licensed practical nurses who are graduates of any approved program, and have completed the required developmental courses and pre-admission courses. This program requires 63 credit hours.

Paramedic to Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (Paramedic-ADN)

To apply for this program, students need to be certified paramedics who are graduates of any approved program, and have completed the required developmental courses and pre-admission courses. This program requires 63 credit hours.

Master’s Degree in Nursing

Students who wish to earn a Master’s Degree in Nursing have two main concentrations to choose from: clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioner.

Clinical Nurse Specialist

Students who opt for the clinical nurse specialist concentration can choose to address the healthcare needs of adults, seniors, children or mental health patients. There are part-time and full-time study plans available for this concentration, as well as online courses.

In general, this program provides preparation for certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), networking and mentoring opportunities, and 500 hours of clinical practice with supervision in the case of adult and senior concentrations.

Nurse Practitioner

Students who opt for the nurse practitioner concentration can choose to join the acute care program, the adult primary care program, the family program, the geriatric program, the pediatric program, the psychiatric program, or the women’s health program. There are part-time and full-time study plans available for all of these programs, as well as online courses.

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

Students who take this program will be prepared to provide acute care within legal parameters. In general, it takes 42 credit hours to complete and includes both clinical and core courses. This means that it can usually be completed in two full-time years or three part-time years, depending on the student.

The program includes three courses: Acute Care NP, Acute Care Therapeutics, and Acute Care NP Role Practicum. To apply for this program, students need to have a minimum of three years nursing experience, and two years intensive care experience.

Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (APCNP)

Students who take this program will be prepared to give adult care in ambulatory settings. To apply for this program, students need to have a minimum of three years nursing experience.

Graduates will be given the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and will be qualified to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. They will also be eligible to get ANCC certification.

Family Nurse Practitioner

Students who take this program will learn important skills for health promotion, illness prevention, illness management and risk detection. To apply for this program, students need to have a minimum of two years clinical experience as registered nurses.

Geriatric Nurse Practitioner

Students who take this program will learn all about health promotion, illness prevention, illness management and risk detection. Graduates will be qualified to become an adult care NP or a family NP. They will also be eligible to get ANCC certification.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

Students who take this program will learn to help with illness prevention, health promotion, acute care, chronic care and risk identification of children up to 21 years old.

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Students who take this program will be prepared to administer advanced mental health care on patients that need it.

Graduates will be able to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) exam to become a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). They can also apply for a Certificate to Prescribe (CTP) from the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner

Students who take this program will focus on primary women’s care. Graduates will usually get to choose to work within medical centers, free clinics, physician’s offices, education and administration, or planned parenthood clinics.

MSN Education

This program prepares students for academic nursing roles. To apply for this program, students will need to acquire educational principles and theories, as well as advanced knowledge in the field.

To apply, students need to have a registered nursing license in Ohio, a BSN or MSN degree and a minimum GPA of 3.0.

MSN/MBA Program (Dual Degree in Nursing and Business Administration)

Students who want to integrate business with nursing skills and knowledge can take this program. It consists of 63 credit hours. If taken full-time, students can complete the program in three years. If taken part-time, students can complete the program in four to five years.

MSN/MPA Program (Dual Degree in Nursing and Public Administration)

Students who want to integrate the public policy and public sector with nursing skills and knowledge can take this program. It consists of 54 credit hours. If taken full-time, students can complete the program in two to three years. If taken part-time, students can complete the program in four to five years.

Post-Master’s Nursing Certificate

Through Kent State University’s nursing programs, students can develop their foundation for post-graduate studies if they want. The post-master’s nursing certificate programs that they can choose from include Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Nurse Practitioner, Nursing and Healthcare Management, Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Education PM Program ( Nurse Educator PM Program), Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric CNS, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner.

Doctoral Nursing Program (PhD in Nursing Program)

This joint program is provided by both Kent State University and the University of Akron. It is meant to prepare nursing students for scholarship in integration and discovery.

To apply, students need to have a BSN and an MSN and a minimum GPA of 3.0. There are part-time and full-time study plans available for this program.

Doctor of Nursing Practice Program (DNP Degree)

This program is relatively new and prepares students to apply research evidence in clinical practice, as well as contribute to healthcare improvements through direct practice, practice scholarship, policy change, and system evaluation.

To apply, students need to have a minimum GPA of 3.0, a valid national APRN certification and a valid RN license in Ohio. This program has been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
