Kent State University

Kent State University is among the largest college systems in the USA, with other eight campuses, the university offers over 280 academic programs at the certificate through doctoral level.  The Ohio based university has 101 years experience (founded in 1910) providing higher education to students.  Kent State University students can enjoy the feel of a large, research institution on the main campus in Kent, or one of the smaller campuses that offer a small, liberal arts college feel.

Online Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

The RN to BSN program at Kent State University offers a focus in disease prevention and risk reduction.  A unique feature of the program allows nurses to take up to 12 graduate degree credits while pursuing their BSN.  This is particularly helpful for nurses who do not want to pursue a graduate degree, but are seeking leadership and teaching positions, which would normally require a master’s degree.  Students may enroll in classes full or part-time and each course in seven weeks.  Course topics include inquiry and research for professional nursing practice, health care policy, population-based nursing, and health promotion.  Students are required to complete an individualized capstone project. The course also offers to unique study abroad experiences in Switzerland and Ireland, which examines global health.  The BSN focuses on management and obtaining leadership opportunities, being a change agent and providing a foundation for graduate level study.  Health promotion, teaching, and information technology are key competency areas in the program.

Duration and Cost

RNs are required to complete 122 credits total for graduation, including liberal arts education and foundation requirements.  Thirty-nine upper division nursing courses required to earn the degree.  Course costs range from 421-431 per credit depending if students are resident or non-resident of Ohio.

Faculty

Kent State University has a large base of nursing faculty, all of whom hold advanced degrees, and many also have PhD degrees.  The university has a Center for Nursing Research on the main campus, with which one-third of all nursing faculty are involved.
