Review of Bethune-Cookman University Nursing Degree Programs

The School of Nursing at Bethune-Cookman University awards Bachelor of Science (BSN) in nursing degrees to its students in several course formats. Students can choose from a traditional course, RN to BSN (Registered Nurse to Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing), and online courses. The program is comprehensive in nature, seeking to educate nurses to serve a variety of populations (e.g., children, adults and vulnerable populations) in health care settings not traditionally offered by other programs such as early childhood centers, home healthcare programs and mental health facilities. Upon graduating, students are eligible to sit the national RN certification exam, the NCLEX-RN. Nursing programs at Bethune-Cookman University are accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and approved by the Florida Board of Nursing.

Pre-Nursing Courses

Students must take pre-nursing courses which consist of general bachelor’s degree requirements and basic science and nursing courses before being accepted to the nursing program at Bethune-Cookman University.

RN to BSN (Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing) Option

Registered Nurses who desire to earn the BSN qualification can do so in as little as one year after meeting Bethune-Cookman University’s nursing prerequisite requirements. In order to be eligible students must hold a nursing license with an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) or diploma. To shorten the length of their program, students must meet course and experiential credit requirements to receive credit for previous coursework and experience.

Traditional BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) Degree Program

The BSN program seeks to develop a well-rounded nurse through offering courses in local, regional and global health in the first two years of undergraduate education followed by experiential learning in Florida health facilities in the remaining two years of the program. Although an undergraduate program, the course seeks to educate future leaders in their organizations.

In order to gain acceptance into the nursing program at B-CU, students must meet all pre-nursing courses and pass the Nursing Admission Examination (NAE) administered by Bethune-Cookman University.

The bachelor’s degree program can be completed in approximately 4 years from start to finish. Less time will be required for the RN to BSN program option.
