Hillsborough Community College Nursing Program Review


Hillsborough Community College (HCC) was founded in 1968, and is a two-year, community college serving over 40,000 students. Hillsborough Community College is unique in that it provide as university-like community for its students. It is among the first community colleges to have an on-campus residence.

The recently completed Honors Institute also strives to foster a sense of academic community on campus. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Review of Hillsborough Community College Nursing Degree Programs

Nursing programs at Hillsborough Community College are housed under the Department of Health Sciences. The nursing program is full-time and allows nurses to gain the experience they need to become nurses in hospitals and other healthcare settings. The programs include virtual simulations in the on-campus lab as well as a local practicum.

The philosophy of the nursing program includes an interactive learning environment in which faculty develop coursework to suit various learning styles and students are stimulated and motivated to think critically. Hillsborough Community College Nursing program believes that the practice of nursing is developed from a variety of science fields including natural, behavioral and social sciences.

Nursing programs at Hillsborough Community College are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing.

Hillsborough Community College Undergraduate Nursing Programs

Associate in Nursing Degree (ADN) Program

Hillsborough Community College offers an Associate in Nursing (ADN) program in which students complete the two years of nursing coursework necessary to become a registered nurse and sit for the national examination for registered nurses, the NCLEX-RN. Students are required to submit applications to both Hillsborough Community College and the nursing program (upon completion of prerequisites). Admission requirements include submitting an application, background check, negative drug exam, and transcripts for all previous coursework. A notable exception to the application process is letters of recommendation-students do not need to submit these documents for consideration to the nursing program. Prerequisites include a minimum 2.0 GPA in all college-level coursework as well as nursing pre-requisite classes including anatomy and physiology, microbiology and English among others. Students are required to complete all pre-requisites before applying to the program.

Resources for Nurses at Hillsborough Community College

Extracurricular resources and activity for nursing students at Hillsborough Community College are interesting and extensive. The Student Nursing Association (SNA) provides an on-campus forum in which students can interact with each other, build a community of like-minded colleagues and gain leadership experience through assisting in the administration of the organization.

The study abroad program to Ecuador in Transcultural Nursing examines both modern and indigenous health care processes in a variety of settings. Students will visit health care institutions such as hospitals and nursing homes, while also interacting with Ecuadorian nurses. Nursing students will also have the opportunity to learn alongside the indigenous community and the plant-based medicinal system still used in the country. For nurses studying intercultural nursing, or who simply want to expand knowledge of their field this program is ideal. Financial aid is available for this program.
