University of West Alabama Nursing School Review

The University of West Alabama (UWA) was established in 1835. The school closed for a time and then reopened, when shortly afterward, in 1876, the school excluded entrance of boys. The name of Livingston Female Academy was a result. The institution was a private organization until 1907. From 1907 until now, it is run under control of the State.

University of West Alabama Nursing Program Review

The Division of Nursing under the University of West Alabama is designed to accommodate students who want to obtain entry level training in the nursing industry in order to start their career as a Registered Nurse (RN). This division is dedicated to making students stand out among their peers by providing essential training associated with become a nurse and making a positive impact on the health care system as well as the patients that they will be dealing with on a daily basis.

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

This two year program offers training in both general education as well as nursing specific training in order to produce a well rounded graduate who has the competency in the field of nursing to provide a positive care experience for the colleagues they work with as well as the patients for which they will be providing the care. This two year program’s essential function is to prepare the student for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). In order to qualify to apply for this exam, students must successfully complete the program and be awarded an Associate Degree. Completion of the program does not guarantee that the student will be eligible to take this exam. Students who choose to enroll in this program must participate in clinical experiences and must abide by the standards set by the Alabama Board of Nursing as well as the establishments in which the clinical experience will be conducted. Students are also responsible for finding transportation to and from the clinical experiences.

Articulation Program with University of Alabama for BSN

The University of West Alabama has teamed up with the University of Alabama in order to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Students can take the courses required before moving on to the BSN program at University of Alabama at the University of West Alabama. After the graduate has passed the licensure examination and completed the courses required before applying to the BSN program, students are then able to obtain their BSN degree in order to use it in their professional title or go on to further their education. Continuing education courses are available through on line courses at University of Alabama.

Student Nurses’ Association

This organization is a automatic membership guarantee for all students who are enrolled in the nursing program at University of West Alabama. In this organization, students become a member of the team who is organizing their own program of study. One student is chosen every year to sit in on staff meetings about the curriculum that is going to be taught. The members also participate in community benefiting actions to enrich the lives of others in their community.
