The Catholic University of America (CUA) is a private, Catholic university located on 193 acres in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC. It was founded in 1887 by the U.S. Catholic bishops with the consent of Pope Leo XIII as a research and graduate studies institution. It is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States. Catholic University began to offer undergraduate degrees in 1904. Continuing its mission to combine academic excellence with Catholic spirituality, the CUA now offers over 240 undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Among several degree programs, the School of Nursing offers a five semester undergraduate Second Degree Program option leading to the BSN degree. This 2nd degree BSN program is open to students who, within 10 years of applying, have earned a bachelors, masters or doctorate degree in a field other than nursing, and who have completed the prerequisite coursework. The application deadline is May 15. However, students are encouraged to apply early as admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis for this competitive program.

George Washington University (GW) is a private university located on 43 acres in the Foggy Bottom section of Washington, DC. It was established by Congress in 1821 as The Columbian College in the District of Columbia. Following an agreement with the George Washington Memorial Association, in 1904 the Columbian changed its name to George Washington University. In addition to its main campus in Washington, DC, GW has two other campuses: Mount Vernon and Virginia. GW is made up of 10 schools and colleges and offers online learning opportunities. The newest school is the School of Nursing.

The first nursing school at GW opened in 1903. After experiencing many changes over the next 100 years, including closing for a time due to the effects of the Depression, in 2010 a new GW School of Nursing opened, and in 2011 the US News & World Report ranked it a top 50 nursing school. The School of Nursing offers the 4 semester, 15-month Second Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing to students who have earned a bachelors degree in major other than nursing. Classes for GW’s second degree BSN nursing program are held at the Ashburn, Virginia campus. To be eligible for admission to this accelerated BSN program, the student must have earned a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 and must have completed the following prerequisite coursework: Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Statistics, Nutrition, and Ethics. The application deadline is February 15.

Howard University is a private, historically black university located on 256 acres in Northwest Washington, DC. It was founded in 1869 by General Oliver Otis Howard, a Civil War hero, to educate African-American clergy. It soon expanded to include liberal arts and medical curricula. Howard now has grown to 13 schools and colleges and offers and over 100 degree programs, and enjoys a diverse study body. The College of Nursing and Allied Health, Division of Nursing at Howard offers 4 tracks to achieve a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The Advanced Placement Track is designed for students who have earned a bachelors degree, allowing the student to complete the coursework and clinical for the BSN on an accelerated schedule. To qualify for admission to this second degree BSN program, the applicant must also have completed all prerequisite classes.
