Accelerated BSN Programs in Maine


There are only two universities in Maine offering accelerated BSN degrees. Featured online programs and the full list of accelerated bachelor’s of science in nursing programs are highlighted below.

The University of Maine Fort Kent is a public college located on a 54-acre campus in Fort Kent, Maine, near the Canadian border.   It was founded in 1878 by the governor of Maine as the Madawaska Training School.  As the school expanded and changed its curriculum, its name was changed several times until in 1970 it adopted its current name. Today the school offers several associate and bachelors degree programs, as well as many online degree options.

The nursing division offers 4 options for obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, including the Accelerated BSN (ABSN).  This BSN accelerated program allows students to earn a BSN degree after 4 semesters of full-time classroom and clinical work.  To qualify for this second degree BSN program, the student must have already earned a bachelors degree in a field other than nursing and must have completed the prerequisite classes with a grade of “C” or better in each.  The prerequisite classes include: anatomy, physiology and statistics.  Though not required, completing the following classes prior to matriculation is strongly encouraged:  Microbiology, Human Nutrition, Chemistry, Growth and development across the lifespan and Transcultural Care in Nursing.  The application deadline is in February.

The University of Southern Maine is a public college located in Portland, Maine with additional campuses in Gorham and Lewiston.  It is part of the University of Maine System.  Founded in 1878 as the Gorham Normal School, it later merged with the University of Maine at Portland.  In 1978 it adopted its current name.  Today, the University of Southern Maine offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in 13 colleges and schools, and has a distance learning program. The School of Nursing offers 3 options for obtaining a BSN degree, including the Accelerated Program. This accelerated BSN track allows students to earn a BSN degree after 15 months of full-time classroom and clinical work.  The program begins in May of each year with the students graduating in August of the following year. To qualify for this 2nd degree BSN program the student must have already earned a bachelors degree in a field other than nursing with a GPA of at least 3.3, and must have completed the 3 prerequisite classes with a grade of “C” or better in each.  The application deadline is in October.
