The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program at North Dakota State University offers several practice options for aspiring bachelors and masters prepared nurses. Nurses with a BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) may enter the doctoral nursing program to earn certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and also complete the DNP. Nurses holding an MSN may enhance their current skills and knowledge to the highest level by continuing in the profession while taking part time classes. The new MSN to DNP FNP program is an online program that trains masters prepared nurses to work in underserved rural communities.

The latter masters option is ideal for nurses who do not yet have APRN (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification), as students will have the opportunity to take the FNP certification exam as part of the DNP program. Admission requirements include a masters level nursing degree with a minimum 3.3 GPA. Admission to the DNP for bachelors prepared nurses requires a minimum 3.0 GPA. Admission requirements to the MSN to DNP program for nurses with APRN certification are also a 3.3 GPA and MSN (Masters of Science in Nursing) qualification.

The University of North Dakota is the oldest university in North Dakota. The university has a Division 1 sports program and nearly 250 student organizations to serve a variety of student interests outside of the classroom.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing program at the University of North Dakota emphasis research areas to improve nursing for underserved and rural populations. The PhD in Nursing program admits nurses with a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), MSN (Masters of Science in Nursing) and a BSN with a masters degree in a field other than nursing. Nurses with masters degree are eligible for advanced placement in the nursing PhD program.

The application deadline for the PhD in Nursing program is February 1 for the following year. Students may earn credit towards the PhD program between being admitted and accepted to the nursing PhD program by enrolling in courses as a non-degree student. Admission requirements include a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 overall or 3.0 in the final two years of undergraduate education. The minimum GPA required for graduate coursework is 3.5. In addition, nursing PhD applicants should take the Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test and also take a prerequisite statistics course as part of their doctoral program application.
