Both a PhD in Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice are offered for nurses seeking roles within or outside of the clinical setting.

The PhD in Nursing at the University of Rhode Island prepares nurses for careers in research that explores the healthcare environment and examines issues related to nurses and patients. Admission requirements to the program include a bachelors of science in nursing earned from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and also an MSN (Master of Science in Nursing).

The DNP program offers the opportunity to specialize as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in one of several areas including gerontology, psychiatry-mental health and the family. The Doctor of Nursing Practice is a practical degree that requires nurses to earn at least 510 clinical practice hours as part of the program. Prospective DNP students should have a masters degree.
