LPN Programs in New York

With more than 10% growth in the demand for Licensed Practical Nurses expected in New York between now and 2016, it’s really not surprising that so many people are considering a career in the field.

Before you can start job hunting, however, you need to complete the appropriate studies, and pass the relevant certification exam.

Studying to Become an LPN in New York

If you want to start working as an Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in New York, you first need to complete a New York State approved LPN course. These courses are offered as certificate, diploma and associates degree courses at colleges and other training facilities throughout the state, and where you go is not important, as long as the course has the State’s stamp of approval.

You should also bear in mind that in order to be eligible to sign up for one of these LPN programs, you need to be 17 years or older, you must have a high school diploma or GED, and you must have a clear criminal record.

What to Expect From Your NY LPN Course

Most LPN courses in New York take between one and two years to complete, and all incorporate practical and theoretical training. Practical training is performed in a real patient care setting, under the supervision of a licensed RN, and theoretical studies happen in a classroom or lab.

You will learn everything you need to know to take responsibility for patient care, under the supervision of a physician or RN, and by the time you have completed your training, you should be ready to work as a Licensed Practical Nurse anywhere in the State of New York.

Certification for LPN’s In New York

Just like most other states, before you can start working as an LPN in New York, even after you have completed your training, you need to pass the NCLEX-PN licensure exam. You then need to apply for licensing. Once that’s done, you can take any job as an LPN at any state or private hospital, nursing home, or doctor or dentists practice.

What an LPN Earns in New York

The average Licensed Practical Nurse in New York earns around $42,000 per annum, although that will depend on your experience and skill, and where you work. Many LPNs also use their studies and work experience as a springboard to other types of medical careers, such as training as an RN later on.
