LVN Programs in Texas

The first thing you should know when you’re considering Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) programs in Texas, is that many of them aren’t called LPN courses in the state. In Texas, as in California, the roles of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) are performed by Licensed Vocational Nurses. So the training programs for practical nurses in “The Lone Star State” are mostly referred to as Vocational Nursing (VN) Programs.

There are several other facts you should know about Texas LVN programs, before you make any decisions.

As with other states, Texas requires would be licensed vocational nurses in the state to complete a state approved training course before they can apply for registration. They also set the curriculum for approved courses, and in Texas, that means nearly 1,400 hours of instruction, of which nearly 560 are classroom based, and the remainder are hands on clinical training – either working with patients, or in a lab.

The state is very strict about what would be LVNs need to know, which means that there are actually relatively few approved training courses for LVN’s in Texas – all of them at colleges, universities and technical or vocational schools.

One option for a vocational nursing program is the Vocational Nursing Institute, located in Houston, Texas. VNI’s vocational nursing program has been approved by the TX Board of Nursing since 2012, and is accredited by the COE (Council on Occupational Education).

Certification and Registration for LVN’s in Texas

As with most other states, your mission to become an LVN in Texas does not begin and end with training. You will also need to meet certain criteria (clear criminal record, drug testing among other specific criteria), and you will need to pass the NCLEX-PN competency exam.

Once you have passed that exam (which you can only take after you have completed the state approved training curriculum), you can apply to the Texas State Board of Nursing for registration. Then you are legally allowed to work as an LVN in the state.

You will legally be allowed to work as a GVN (Graduate Vocational Nurse) for 75 days after you complete the course, but this grace period is not renewable, nor can you extend it, so you should make sure you take the test as soon as possible!

Career and Earnings Outlook for an LVN in Texas

The salary range for licensed vocational nursing varies quite a bit, based on geographical location, and where you work. LVN’s in big cities tend to earn more, as do those who work in high pressure environments like ICU’s.

On average, however, you can expect to earn anything from about $32,000 upwards working as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas. You will also find that with a high demand for LVNs in the state, there are plenty of employment options, from working with infants in maternity hospitals, to caring for the aged in nursing homes, and everything in between.
