CNA Programs in Maine

As with many other states in the US, there’s a rapidly growing demand for qualified Certified Nursing Assistants. So whether you’re looking to launch a new career, or to make a change and get started in healthcare, this is very definitely a good choice.

Let’s take a closer look at how you go about qualifying as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Maine.

Who Is In Charge of CNA Training In Maine?

The Maine Department of Education is in charge of ensuring that CNA courses meet the state requirements. All Certified Nurse Assistants who work in Maine must have completed one of their approved courses.

Who Qualifies to Train As a CNA in Maine?

Maine has one of the lowest standards of admission for CNA training in the US. In order to qualify for training, you only need to be 16 years or older, and have completed 9th grade. You also need to be able to speak, read and write English.

It’s important to note that many people choose to use the CNA training and registration program as a stepping stone to other fields in the health care business, like nursing or medical administration. In most cases, you will need a high school diploma or a GED to study further, so if you are hoping to do that, you may want to complete your GED first.

What Can You Expect from the Maine CNA Training Course?

The CNA training program for the state of Maine is one of the most comprehensive, and longest, out there. The course consists of 180 hours of training, with about 90 hours being spent in the class room, 70 on clinical practice, and another 20 on clinical work.

The training program for nurses aides in Maine teaches candidate Certified Nurses Assistants everything they need to know to work in a nursing home or hospital. Expect to learn basic nursing skills, how to assist patients with rehabilitation, interpersonal skills, communication, patient rights and many other job specific skills.

Where Can You Study to Become a CNA In Maine?

There are many different institutions that offer state approved CNA training in Maine. You can contact the Maine Department of Education for a list of training providers, or contact community colleges, colleges, nursing homes or hospitals directly.

Also remember that in Maine, CNA’s who complete their training and pass the competency exam, and then go on to secure employment within 12 months are eligible for a refund of a portion of their training costs.

What Does a CNA Earn In Maine?

The average hourly wage for a CNA in Maine is just over $11. Many earn considerably more than that though, and many also use their time as a CNA as a springboard to other health care professions.

There’s really no quicker way to get involved in the health care business in Maine, or just about anywhere else in the US, than to train as a CNA, so if you are dreaming of a career in the medical field, this should definitely be on your list of potential career options.
