Table of Contents

Texas is a huge state, and it comprises everything from rich areas to poor ones, and from metropolitan areas to remote rural ones. Because of its size and diversity, Texas faces certain challenges when it comes to supplying its residents with adequate nursing care, including educating students without access to nursing schools, luring qualified nurses to underserved areas, and more.

Jump to Texas Nursing Programs >>

Texas has plenty of excellent campus-based nursing schools, but lot of Texas nursing students choose to pursue two year nursing degrees. Though a two year degree can be obtained faster than a four year degree, the truth is that a lot of two year nursing students end up taking longer to become licensed than four year nursing students do.

The large number of students pursuing two year nursing degrees leaves these degree programs without enough teachers and classroom space to educate all of these pupils, leading to waitlists and crowded classrooms, and creates a dearth of both advanced nursing graduates, and qualified nursing educators.

Careers for Nurses in TX

Texas is a big state with some very heavily populated areas, so a lot of nursing students end up going on to work for large state hospitals in metropolitan areas like Houston. These aren’t the only places that need qualified nurses, though. Texas faces a serious shortage of rural nurses, advanced nurses, and nursing teachers.

Though Texas nurses, on the whole, earn slightly less than the national average, there is considerable variation in nursing salaries across the entire state. An RN working in Houston can expect to draw a median annual salary of $65,204, while an RN in Waco would earn $58,171, and an RN in Galveston would earn $62,838. These medians represent an overall state-wide salary range from the mid $40,000s to the mid $70,000s. All figures are from the BLS.

Texas Board of Nursing

Texas’ Board of Nursing is the state’s regulatory body when it comes to all aspects of the nursing industry in Texas, and has been regulating safe nursing practice for residents of TX for over 100 years, since 1909. The Texas Board of Nursing resides at 333 Guadalupe, Suite 3-460, Austin, TX, 78701.
