Mississippi Nursing Schools

Mississippi has around twenty different campus-based nursing schools, but the state still faces some barriers to producing new nurses in the kind of numbers that it needs.

There aren’t necessarily enough nursing educators to staff all of these nursing programs, and many students attempt to enroll in the same degree programs, creating long waitlists for other would-be students. Fortunately, Mississippi has enough schools and enough nursing degree programs that students can easily find an alternative, if their school of choice wait lists them.

Mississippi also faces the problem posed by having both urban and rural areas the same state. A lot of nurses are drawn to hospitals in urban areas, since these are the facilities that can generally offer the highest pay, sign-on bonuses, and other incentives. Meanwhile, rural communities suffer from a lack of qualified health care, as community hospital staff find themselves having to put in mandatory overtime, make cutbacks to patient care, and take other drastic measures to help spread themselves out across all of their patients.

Financial Aid and Other Incentives for Mississippi Nursing Students

In an effort to graduate more nurses, and attract more new graduates to rural medical facilities, Mississippi has implemented several financial aid measures. These can help students repay some or all of their tuition or student loans, and include:
– The Mississippi Undergraduate Rural Health Corps Loan/Scholarship Program
– The Mississippi Nursing Education Loan Scholarships Program
– The Mississippi Nursing Teachers Stipend
– Scholarships and grants offered by schools

Career Options for Mississippi Nurses

In a state like Mississippi, which varies pretty widely when it comes to socioeconomic and geographic areas, it’s reasonable to expect things like nursing salaries to vary along with it. An RN working as a hospital staff nurse in Columbus can anticipate bringing home a median annual salary of $56,134. An RN in Biloxi can bring home $55,674. Lastly, an RN in Jackson can bring home $59,617. All figures are from the BLS.

Mississippi Board of Nursing

Mississippi’s Board of Nursing can help keep nurses, nursing students, and nursing educators in the loop about everything relating to their professions. The Board can provide information on licensing and examinations, license renewals, continuing education requirements, approved nursing programs, pass rates, changes in regulations, industry news, and much more.
