Maryland Nursing Schools

There are 25+ accredited nursing schools in Maryland, mostly located within the larger cities or suburbs of the larger cities such as Baltimore. There are other universities located in smaller towns, however, and nearly every type of degree at every level is offered at a Maryland university.

Maryland isn’t very large, but it covers a wide variety of areas, from metropolitan Washington, D.C., all the way to relatively rural Rising Sun. As a result, there are a lot of nursing schools and programs within Maryland, and licensed or registered nurses can pretty much take their pick as to whether they’d prefer to work in a large city hospital, or in a smaller practice out in the country.

Recent boosts to state funding mean that Maryland’s schools are now able to accommodate more nursing students, which means that they can graduate more nurses every year. This helps offset some of the issues experienced due to the worldwide nursing shortage, by helping Maryland turn out well-educated, well-prepared nurses faster than they could before.

Career Options for Maryland Nurses

Maryland has a variety of areas that nurses can go to work in, ranging from very affluent communities, to underserved urban and rural areas. As a result, salaries vary pretty widely. The median annual salary for a registered nurse in Baltimore is about $69,500, which is above the national average. This reflects a range of $57,000 to nearly $83,000, which highlights the discrepancies in salary for nurses that work in different areas of the State. All figures are from the BLS.

Nurses that choose to work in underserved areas may earn less annually, but can also be eligible for a variety of scholarships that aren’t available to nurses that choose not to. As a result, it may be worthwhile for prospective nursing students to consider working in poorer areas that are experiencing a shortage of nursing staff, even if it means earning a smaller annual salary than big city hospitals can provide.
