Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences Nursing Program Review

The goal of Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences (PA College), previously known as Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences (LGCNHS), is to meet the growing demands of the healthcare system. Constant advances in medicine and changes in the trends and issues concerning patients and medical professionals make healthcare a dynamic and challenging field. An education from Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences ensures students will be prepared to face these challenges head on and succeed in their careers of choice.

Nursing Program

The Nursing Program at Lancaster General provides two options for seeking Nursing education. Students interested in pursuing careers in the field can opt to complete these programs and immediately seek employment after licensure, or use this learning as a basis for more advanced education.

Associate Degree in Nursing

Nurses do much more than check vital signs and give injections. A skilled professional nurse will offer comprehensive whole-patient care as part of a cooperative healthcare team. Whole-patient care refers to addressing not just physical needs, but psychosocial, emotional and spiritual needs as well. An Associate Degree in Nursing provides students with the clinical and interpersonal skills to approach each patient and family as an individual, important case rather than just as another number on a rotation. Students engage in general education courses related to the liberal arts, humanities, mathematics and sciences as well as core nursing material over either a two- or three-year course of study. The two-year plan is based on full-time study five days a week. The three year option offers classes on weekends and in the evening to better fit already busy schedules.

Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (RN to BSN)

Offering more advanced studies and increased career opportunities, the RN to BSN Program allows Registered Nurses who have already completed an approved course of study to seek baccalaureate degrees in Nursing. This accelerated program uses the previous education and experience of RNs and applies it toward the learning necessary to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. This program is offered one day a week, with each individual course lasting an average of five weeks. The intensive program can be completed in less than two years. To encourage students to strive for excellence, Lancaster General offers Associate degree students access to the RN to BSN Program on a dual-enrollment basis for one calendar year after successful graduation from the initial program. This allows students to transition smoothly into the more complex program without going through another admissions process or paying additional fees.

A Nursing education does not have to end at the baccalaureate level. Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences prepares its students for a lengthy academic career dedicated to advanced understanding and mastery of nursing-related topics. Students are able to take the learning acquired through this Nursing Program and enter Master’s degree and Doctorate programs at other institutions. Beyond the daily medical tasks associated with nursing, an education through Lancaster General provides students with the skill and knowledge to pursue roles in administration, managerial and supervisory positions and education.
