Jefferson County-DuBois Area Vocational-Technical School Nursing Program Review

The faculty at Jefferson County-DuBois Area Vocational-Technical School (Jeff Tech) in Pennsylvania respects the ability of high school students to gain career-building knowledge and skills through directed, technical instruction. This, along with offering continuing adult education opportunities, is what developed Jefferson County-DuBois AVTS into an impressive training ground for tomorrow’s skilled professionals.

Nursing Program

The Nursing Program at Jeff Tech was designed to take a small group of students, approximately 40 each year, and instill in them the clinical, academic and interpersonal skills necessary to create effective nurses. This program is intended as an entry level educational opportunity that prepares graduates to sit for state licensing exams and seek immediate employment in the dynamic nursing workforce or progress to further levels of education.

Practical Nursing Program

The Practical Nursing Program is an ideal option for adult students hoping to gain stable employment while pursuing advanced education. Becoming an LPN fills highly in-demand roles and allows graduates to work and continue to train at other post-secondary institutions at the same time. LPNs are tremendously useful members of a healthcare team. These nurses offer basic care and treatment ranging from life care tasks of bathing, feeding or maneuvering patients, to implementing treatment plans through simple procedures. LPNs work under the direct supervision of higher-level Registered Nurses, physicians and dentists in many medical environments.

Admission Requirements

Jeff Tech maintains high standards when it comes to the students they admit into the Practical Nursing Program. Interested applicants must have graduated from an approved high school or equivalent program, and submit transcripts showing grades of no lower than “C”. Academic ability and aptitude is tested using the standardized ATI TEAS exam. Beyond these academic requirements applicants must also fulfill personal requirements including submission of three professional references, documentation of a comprehensive physical exam including extensive screenings and compliance with medical recommendations and satisfactory evaluation of moral character and aptitude toward communication and basic nursing through an interview with the coordinator of the Jeff Tech Practical Nursing Program.

Career Opportunities

Licensed Practical Nurses are featured in nearly all healthcare settings. After achieving licensure, graduates from Jeff Tech’s Nursing Program will be eligible to compete in the workforce and seek employment in fields that allow them to meet personal and professional aspirations. These career opportunities include roles in hospitals, dental offices, private practices, long-term care facilities and through community agencies. Many LPNs have even found success and personal fulfillment through providing medical service in a military setting.

Graduates leave Jefferson County-DuBois Area Vocational-Technical School confident in their ability to fulfill the roles and responsibilities of their chosen field. Practical Nursing students will be adequately equipped to seek licensure and begin entry level careers offering basic medical care to patients while also addressing social, emotional and spiritual needs through communication with the patient and loved ones. Focusing on the importance of the role of family and other significant others in the treatment and long-term care of a patient allows Licensed Practical Nurses to provide whole-person care. Often psychological support and social interaction are as vital to the well-being of a patient as the medical treatment itself, and Jeff Tech graduates are equipped with the knowledge and understanding to provide this form of care.
