Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County Nursing Program Review

Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County (CTCLC) is based in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The center began in 1973 as a high school. Currently, the center operates primarily as a high school, but also offers vocational and technical programs for adults. Adult programs award certificates and train students for licensing examinations often in as little as one year or less. The primary purpose of Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County is to prepare students for entry-level careers in a specific vocation. The school is a public institution which serves just fewer than 100 students in 9 school districts. Career Technology Center was accredited by the Bureau of Career and Technical Education of the Pennsylvania State Board of Vocational Education until 2009.

Nursing Programs

The Practical Nursing program at Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.  The LPN program was established by the Manpower Development Training Act in 1967.

Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County Nursing Certificate Programs

LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse)

The LPN program prepares students to work alongside and under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs) and physicians. Admission requirements to the LPN program include being a Pennsylvania resident and having a high school diploma or GED.

The LPN program can be completed in 52 weeks. The practical nursing program includes both theory and clinical practicum experience, with the nursing program being split 60/40 between clinical practicum experiences and nursing theory coursework respectively. Upon completion of the LPN program, nurses are eligible to take the National Council for Licensure Exam for Practical Nurses, NCLEX-PN to become an LPN.

Nurse Aide

The Nurse Aide certification program is offered through continuing education. Course offerings and times vary each semester and thus can accommodate differing schedules. The summer course has classes Monday through Thursday from 8:30 to 2:30 and in spring Monday and Wednesday from 4 to 8 pm. The nurse aid program requires a clinical rotation of 45 hours and prepares nurses to work a variety of shifts.

Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County Continuing Education Programs

Other continuing education courses for nurses such as the LPN Refresher Course are offered at Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County. The course prepares LPNs re-entering the practice after some time off with training and skills necessary to return to nursing as a competent fully-functional nurse. Health and medical related courses such as medical billing, terminology and anatomy and physiology are also offered.            

Health Occupations Technology Program

The Health Occupations Technology program operates on three levels and includes a Nurse Aide curriculum component in Level II of the program. In Level 1, students explore a variety of healthcare careers including dental assisting and learn basic healthcare technology. In Level II, students obtain healthcare experience and are prepared to take the PA State Nurse Aide Certification and complete a 60 hour clinical practicum. In Level 3, students work as a medical assistant and develop additional skills in areas such as safety and computer training. Upon completion of the Health Occupations Technology program, students will be prepared to take an entry-level career in nursing or another healthcare field.
