The 4-year bachelor of nursing undergraduate degree at Adelphi University is open to high school graduates or transfer students who have completed prerequisites courses. Freshman students must first complete the lower division courses upon admission as a preparation for admission for junior and senior level nursing courses. Students admitted for the BSN have several study abroad opportunities to choose from including an exchange program with Jinan University of China, a Transcultural Nursing Experience in Arizona, a community service project in Costa Rica and Peru.
Students should note that the study abroad programs are not-sponsored by the university and as such, they must grace the expenses. Academically endowed students can also apply for the Honors Program to enjoy the numerous benefits in forms of scholarships, abroad learning experiences and many more. By the end of the program, graduates can apply for the NLEX-Registered Nurses Exam for Licensure.

The generic track is designed for first time college students and is divided into lower and upper division phases. All students start the lower division level and progress into the upper division if they meet the required admission criteria. Admission into the upper division is very competitive and no students are given guaranteed admission. Students must complete all lower division courses and have cumulative GPA of 50% in addition to earning at least 50% in the NLN pre-RN admission exam. The college accepts only 100 students each fall semester from the large pool of applicants. The program is offered on a full time day basis at the Brookdale Campus of Hunter College. Lehman College offers a 120-credit generic nursing program consisting of 75 upper division credits. The upper division is designed for students who have completed at least 45 lower division prerequisites courses during the first 2 years of study. Applicants for the upper division must have earned a cumulative GPA of 2.75 in the above mentioned required credits and a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on all college courses taken. As part of the admission process, applicants must take and pass the HESI A2 admission exam in order to be considered for the nursing major. The upper division phase is highly concentrated with nursing courses and requires students to have full time commitment to ensure completion in two years. Additionally, students must not exceed five years in completion time from the time the first nursing course was taken. All students with exceptional academic abilities can join the honors program or take independent projects from the nursing department.

CUNY-York College prepares students for the NLCEX-RN exam through a series of general education courses followed by a set of nursing major courses. Prior to admission to the nursing major, students must complete the 56 credit general education curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and with a grade of “C” or higher. Upon completion the general education courses, students interested in the major must take the CUNY Admission Exam and the NLN-Pre-admission exam for Registered nurses. Applicants must note that admission to the major is very competitive and completion of the general education phase is not a guarantee for entrance into the major. Besides the nursing curriculum students can participate in the nursing club or the honors program for the academically bright students.

The program for freshman students starts with a strong foundation of liberal arts and supporting nursing courses. On the other hand, transfer students who have completed the required liberal arts and supporting courses must have earned a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be considered for admission for the major. The track allows students to start on clinical nursing courses as early as the sophomore year hence more practical experience upon graduation.

Daemen College has a unique Bachelor of Science nursing program with a curriculum following the order 1+2+1. The BSN 1+2+1 is designed to prepare students to earn a bachelors degree while first completing the NLCLEX-RN exam for quick entry into nursing practice. The curriculum design was developed in a bid to counter the current shortage of nurses allowing students to earn their licensure while still continuing with a bachelor qualification. Daemen offers the program in partnership with other colleges including Eric Community college, Genesee Community College and Trociare College. Currently the college has stopped the partnership with Niagra County Community College and interested students can check for admission options in the other 3 available colleges. In the above arrangement, students first earn an associate degree from the college and become eligible to take the NLCEX-RN exam and then proceed to complete an extra year to be eligible for the BSN degree. Outside the nursing curriculum, the college runs the Pi Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International honor Society for nurses.

Transfer students that do not meet the above GPA requirements may be admitted on a probationary basis and take 2 full time semesters so as to be designated as nursing majors. Prior to applying to the nursing major, students interested in MSMC must ensure they have completed the identified prerequisites courses required for the major with a GPA of 2.75 or higher. In addition, applicants must also take the TEAS test and a pre-nursing computerized test. Admission to the traditional track of the BSN is very competitive and the GPA alone may not be used for admission purposes. Completion of the program grants students academic eligibility to apply and take the NLCEX-RN exam to become a registered nurse. Accreditation for the program is by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Mount Saint Mary also offers an advanced placement track for licensed practical nurses who wish to earn a BSN.

The undergraduate bachelor of nursing at NYIT is offered at the Old Westbury Campus and welcomes both freshman and transfer and change of major students. However, transfer students who have taken any nursing courses may not have their nursing courses accepted at NYIT. The program is clearly divided into two phases; the pre-clinical phase for freshman and sophomore students taking general education and prerequisites courses and the clinical phase for clinical courses in junior and senior years.
Admission to the program is a 3-step affair. The first step is admission in the freshman as a nursing intent while taking prerequisites courses. Step 2 is the competitive pre-clinical step where students are expected to have completed all prerequisites coursework and enrolled for the gateway to nursing course. At the 3rd step, students who have completed the first 2 steps are considered for admission. Factors including courses repeat and withdrawal cycles, GPA, reference letters, and a personal easy are considered during selection. Fall admission is open for all groups of students while spring admission is reserved for all other students except the freshman students.

For transfer students, admission is not guaranteed by meeting the minimum requirements or passing the Kaplan Exam. Instead, availability of clinical resources and class space determines the admittance of transfer cases.

The plan of the program is for students to complete the lower division requirements of the Bachelor of Science in nursing program at any accredited university/college and transfer the credits to Stony Brook university Hospital. Students may also choose to take the lower division at Stony Brook College. This generic program should not be confused with the Registered nurse to BSN program or the accelerated BSN track for students with another bachelor’s degree. Students that choose to take lower division courses at another college must check with the school for the specific prerequisites to take to ensure all credits transfer to Stony Brook. At Stony Brook University Hospital, students must bring-on at least 57 credits take at least 71 credits onsite in clinical nursing courses to be eligible to graduate and take the NCLEX-RN exam.

Applicants who have been shortlisted from the outcomes of the prerequisite courses may then take the NLN Preadmission exam. Admission is very selective and competitive and meeting the requirements for admission does not guarantee a seat in the nursing major class. Students who are officially accepted in the major must maintain a minimum grade of “C” to ensure retention and progression in the program. Upon completion, graduates become academically eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam.

Admittance to the major is very competitive and depends upon academic qualifications of applicants and the number of spaces available. Change of major students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and must seek approval from the nursing department depending on space availability. On the other hand, transfer students from other colleges may have up-to 67 credits accepted at Plattsburgh with a maximum of 34 on nursing courses. Students with exceptional academic performance may apply for induction in the Sigma Theta Gamma Delta Chapter of SUNY Plattsburgh.

Students wishing to get admitted to the Bachelor of Science in nursing at SUNY Brockport must first gain general admission to the college. Acceptance into the college is separate from acceptance into the nursing major and students complete a prerequisites curriculum prior to applying to the major. Upon admission as a freshman, students remain designated as “Nursing Intents” until they have applied and become admitted into the nursing major phase. The first 2 years of college are reserved for prerequisites courses and a minimum of 54 credits must have been completed prior to applying usually at the end of the sophomore year. Direct transfer and change of major students require a higher cumulative GPA to be eligible to apply than traditional freshmen. Students interested in military service may apply for the prestigious Army ROTC nursing scholarships. Brockport runs an active Sigma Theta Omicron Beta Chapter for the academically endowed students.

SUNY-Upstate has formed partnerships with most community and two year colleges in New York that offer the Associate degree in nursing. On their part, the partner colleges offer the first 2 years of the 2+2 plan after which students become eligible to write the NCLEX-RN exam.
