Abilene Christian University

In a Christ-centered environment, Abilene Christian University offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) meant to prepare students for initial licensure as registered nurses. The BSN starts with a 2-year pre-nursing phase whereby students take general education and foundational nursing courses. Students then apply for admission in the school of nursing to take the major during the spring semester of sophomore level. Besides the regular nursing curriculum, nursing students at Abilene take faith, medical and mission trips in destinations all over the globe.

It is important to note that previously, ACU was offering the nursing major with partnership with Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing long with McMurray and Hardin-Simmons University. However, currently the university is admitting students to its new and independent upper division nursing program.

Every fall and spring semesters, Baylor University admits a limited number of students for the undergraduate basic Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and takes a minimum of 4 years of full time study to complete.  The track is divided into two phases; an upper division portion that can be completed at any accredited college or university and an upper division phase offered at the Baylor Campus. All lower division courses must be completed before students apply to the Baylor campus upper division. Transfer and generic Baylor university students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are welcome to apply for the last two years of professional nursing courses. Upon acceptance in the university, students spend most of their time at the BU Medical Center taking clinical classes. Outside the nursing curriculum, students can take courses in parish nursing or take mission trips most often to Africa and the Honduras.

Concordia University

Concordia University offers a highly competitive baccalaureate nursing program consisting of pre-nursing and professional sequence of courses. The program is approved by the Texas board of nursing and prepares students to take the NCLEX-RN exam for initial licensure as registered nurses. In the two distinct parts of the program, students start as freshman to take the prerequisites courses designed for the first two years. Midway the sophomore level, students may then apply for admission to the nursing major designed for junior and senior years. Although transfer students are welcome to apply for the major, qualified traditional Concordia students are given preference. As a university with a Christian foundation, all students are required to take a mission trip within the junior year either in fall and spring breaks or at summer and Christmas seasons.

East Texas Baptist University

Within a Christian environment, ETBU offers a pre-licensure bachelor of nursing program designed to prepare students for the NCLEX-RN exam. The program starts kicks off with the two initial years being reserved for liberal arts, Christian and general education courses followed by a sequence of professional nursing courses in the last two years. Applicants to the nursing major must have completed the pre-nursing at ETBU or applying for transfer from other colleges or universities. The university accepts new cohorts in the nursing major once annually for classes starting fall semester. All applicants must have a GPA of 2.8 or higher in all pre-requisites courses to be eligible to apply for the major. If admitted, nursing courses are taken in a block system meaning one course must be completed before proceeding to the next.

Hardin Simmons University

In a Christian environment of the Baptist General convention of Texas, Hardin-Simmons University offers a pre-licensure nursing program aimed at preparing entry level registered nurses. The Bachelor of Science program is offered under a consortium bringing together McMurray University and Abilene Christian University culminating in a common curriculum at Patty Hanks Shelton School of nursing. Under this plan, students can complete core, foundational, liberal arts and Christian courses at Hardin-Simmons University and later on transfer to take the nursing major at PHSSN. This means that the freshman and sophomore years are spent at any of the three partners of the consortium before students are allowed to apply for the nursing major. The BSN is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the states board of nursing. However, Abilene Christian University plans to pull out of the plan after developing its own nursing program.

Houston Baptist University

Entry into the bachelor of nursing at HBU is a 2-step process involving admission to the university followed by application and selection for the nursing major. Each fall and spring semester, the university admits about 35-40 students to the nursing major from an applicant pool of traditional and transfer students (challenge program option). Prior to applying, applicants must have already completed a pre-nursing program and the HESI A2 assessment Exam with a score of 80% or higher. Pre-nursing courses previously taken must carry a minimum GPA of 3.0. Under their scholarship programs, the university has a number of-university specific nursing scholarships that students can apply for. Besides the normal curriculum, the university selects a few students to join the Honors College to pursue the Nursing Honors curriculum.

Lamar University

The Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) program at Lamar University is a 4-year pre-licensure track designed for entry level students seeking initial licensure as registered nurses. The university offers both traditional and transfer students a chance to take the upper division professional nursing courses. However, qualified traditional LU students are given admission priority over transfer students who are assessed on a case by case basis on space availability. Applicants to the nursing program must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on all preadmission courses to be eligible for selection in either fall or spring admission dates. While in the nursing program, students can enjoy numerous learning resources including the high fidelity simulation lab, the Community-based Service learning among others. Completion of this track leads to academic eligibility to apply and write the NCLEX-RN exam.

McMurray University

McMurray University under a consortium with Hardin-Simmons and Abilene Christian University offers a 4-year CCNE accredited nursing curriculum designed for the beginner student. The program allows students to take prerequisite courses at McMurray before applying for transfer to the Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing (PHSSN) to complete the professional phase of the bachelor of nursing. Students must have completed the lower division sequence of courses with a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be eligible make the transition to the nursing major. However, due to the limited number of seats for the program, admission is very competitive and completing the lower division courses with the required grades does not guarantee admission to PHSSN. Upon admission to PHSSN, students take 4 terms to complete the BSN curriculum and become eligible to take the NLCEX-RN exam. While in the nursing program, traditional McMurray students can apply to join the University Honors program.

Midwestern State University

Midwestern State University offers a pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing program designed for students seeking entry level positions as registered nurses. The program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and is a highly competitive program. New students are admitted twice annually for fall and spring starts dates.  The curriculum consists of both general education and foundation nursing courses in the first two years followed by a two years of nursing professional courses. For admission in the nursing major phase, students must have completed the lower division courses with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. The HESI A2 exam with scores of 80% must also be taken before applying. Admission to the major is based on a point system where students are ranked and selected. Students in the major can join the Student Nurses Association to venture on other nursing avenues.

Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing

PHSSN offers a unique nursing bachelor of nursing program under a consortium program with Abilene Christian University, McMurray University and Hardin-Simmons University. The program is designed in such a way that students begin their academic journey at either of the above mentioned university before proceeding to PHSSN. PHSSN does not offer general education, liberal arts or nursing prerequisites courses; this being the reason why students have to start off at the other universities. After completion of prerequisites courses in at any other three universities, students who meet the admission requirements can apply for transition to take the nursing major at PHSSN. All nursing and courses with clinical components are completed at Patty Hanks and students become eligible to take the NLCEX-RN exam to become registered nurses. Soon, Abilene Christian University is expected to starts its own program and maybe conduct an independent training.

Prairie View A&M University

PVAMU has an undergraduate nursing program that is clearly divided into lower division pre-nursing courses and a clinical upper division portion. To join the program, students may start with the pre-nursing track at PVAMU to complete the lower division courses or transfer them from an accredited college. Whatever the option, student eying the nursing major are expected to have completed their lower division courses with a GPA of 2.75 or higher. In addition, they must have taken the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) or other equivalent tests including ACCUPLACER or COMPASS. Admission to take the clinical studies happens twice annually for classes starting fall or spring. The university has 11 nursing-specific scholarships that students can apply for.  Outside the classroom, nursing students can apply for membership in the active university’s Student Nursing Association.

Southwestern Adventist University

SWAU offers a CCNE accredited Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing program designed to prepare graduates take the NLEX exam for initial registered nurses licensure. First, students needs to complete at least 50 credits in prerequisites, general education and nursing cognate courses before applying for the professional nursing major. Students achieved a minimum cumulative of 2.75 in the above courses may apply for the nursing major. The program is highly competitive and applicants are considered in terms of admission exams scores, GPA and space availability. The entire program takes 4 years to complete and is offered in an environment that nurtures spirituality. Nursing major students can join the Nurses Lounge network to gain professional network, relevant content and Information.

Stephen F Austin State University

NLNAC fully accredits the undergraduate bachelors of nursing at SFASU and prepares students for entry level registered nurse positions. Students have to apply separately for admission in the nursing program even after gaining general admission to the university to take lower division courses. The university has two admission cycles for the nursing major in fall and spring but applicants who have met the required prerequisite requirements can apply anytime around the year. Nursing major requirements include but not limited to a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher on lower division courses and a good score on the TEAS V admission exam. If admitted in the major, student can apply for a number of available nursing-specific scholarship opportunities. Beyond the curriculum nurses can join the Texas Student Nurses Association and the Omicron Eta chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing.

Tarleton State University

Every fall and spring semesters, Tarleton State University admits 60-70 students to the Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) from a pool of 130-150 applicants. The BSN is designed for generic students with no prior nursing experience along with licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) who wish to complete a BSN degree. Typically, applicants are considered for the major using a point system based on a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, number of lower division courses taken at Tarleton, TEAS V scores and residency status.  Only applicants who have completed prerequisites courses can apply for the major through a separate application process. Once admitted, generic students take about 5 semesters to complete the major on a full time basis though a part time option can be approved by the department and definitely takes longer. Graduates become eligible to apply and write the NLEX-RN exam for initial licensure as registered nurses.

Texas A&M International University

The basic nursing program at TAMIU is designed for students seeking initial licensure as registered nurses. The basic baccalaureate track is fully accredited by the NLNAC and enables student nurses become eligible to take the NLCEX-RN exam upon graduation.  Although admission to the major is prioritized for generic students who have completed lower division courses at TAMIU, transfer students who meet the required admission criteria may be considered on a space availability basis. All applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher to be eligible to apply in addition to have completed a Nurse Entrance Exam.  New students are admitted in the major once annually for the fall semester.

Texas A&M Health Sciences Center

TAMHSC undergraduate nursing program is a standard 2-year bachelor of science in nursing consisting of upper division nursing courses only.  This traditional pre-licensure track is offered at the College Station campus only unlike the 2nd degree in nursing available at College station and Round Rock sites. As an exclusive Health Science Center, TAMHSC does not offers general education and prerequisite nursing courses and as such, all applicants seeking admission must have competed the 58 semester hours of such courses at an accredited institution. Such courses above must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and special admission preference is given to applicants who have taken the pre-nursing curriculum at Williamson and Brazos Counties. The nursing major starts in the Summer II term and progresses for 2 years with a total of 62 credits being offered. Graduates become eligible to take the NLCEX-RN exam to become licensed nurses.

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi

Among the four undergraduate nursing programs at TAMUCC is the generic Bachelor of Science in nursing. The undergraduate nursing programs at the university are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The BSN starts with a pre-nursing curriculum of university core and prerequisite courses with the entry point to specialty courses occurring in the junior year. The core and prerequisites are designed to be taken during the freshman and sophomore years. Such must carry an average GPA of 3.0 or higher in order to gain eligibility to apply for admission in the college of nursing. TAMUCC avails a number of nursing-specific scholarship opportunities for students enrolled in the college of nursing and health sciences. In addition to the regular curriculum, students can engage in several student organizations including the Texas Student Nurses Association and the Eta Omicron chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.

Texas Christian University

Every fall semester, TCU admits about 72 students in the bachelor of nursing track. The program is unique in that students admitted as freshmen to pursue the pre-nursing courses are eligible to continue with the nursing major if they maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on the aforementioned courses. This means that generic students do not require a separate application to apply for nursing major. On the other hand, transfer applicants can gain admission to the nursing program if there slots left out from the generic applicants. The major takes 5 semesters to complete and students become academically eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam for initial licensure as registered nurses.

Texas State University- San Marcos

The Bachelor of Science in nursing at TSU-San Marcos admits about 100 students every fall semester to study at the Round Rock campus. This 4-year track is divided into two phases; a pre-nursing phase consisting of prerequisite and general education courses only available at San Marcos campus and the nursing major specialty courses offered only at the Round Rock campus. However, students may choose to take prerequisites courses at another institution and apply for course transfer and equivalency at Round Rock. The required average GPA to be eligible to apply for the nursing major is 2.9 or higher in addition to satisfactory scores in the TEAS V tests. Upon admission in the school of nursing, students take about 2.5 years to complete the professional nursing curriculum.

Texas Tech University Health Science Center- El Paso

The Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing is one of the two schools of nursing offering the 4-year traditional nursing degree at TTHSC. The school is a relativity new venture having opened its doors for pioneer students in 2011. The school is named after the family name of a relative of the donor who funded towards its establishment. The traditional bachelor of nursing is designed for students with no prior nursing experience and as such prepares student for eligibility to take the NCLEX-RN exam. This track of the nursing program has already received initial approval from the state board of nursing and is seeking full approval from the board and accreditation from CCNE.

Texas Tech University Health Science Center-Lubbock

The Health Science Center School of Nursing offers a traditional Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) program with an aim to prepare students for initial licensure. This school of nursing under TTUHC is one of the nursing schools mandated to offer the 4-year traditional nursing degree program. Under it are four satellite campuses in Dallas, Abilene, Amarillo and Permian Basin which all offer an identical program. Students are admitted in the nursing major upon completion of prerequisite courses to complete a set of 63 credit hours in a period of 4 regular semesters. The only exception to this regular study format is for students at the Abilene campus who have to take a full-load summer session in place a 2nd spring semester thus enabling them to have a December graduation.

Texas Women’s University-Dallas Center

Dallas Campus of TWU offers an upper division phase of the 4-year Bachelor of Science in nursing. The entire program is structured in such a way that students first enroll at the Denton campus to take the general education and prerequisite courses before applying for transfer to Dallas center. At least 46 credit hours of lower division must have been completed with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 prior to students applying for the upper division phase. There are two admission dates annually for fall and spring start dates and students are urged to submit their applications 6 weeks prior to the deadlines for early processing. Prior to applying, applicants must have also taken the TEAS V assessment exam. Upon admission at Dallas Center students continue with the junior and senior years, until graduation where they gain eligibility for the NLCEX-RN exam. Bright students looking for extracurricular activities can join the TWU Dallas Beta Beta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing.

Texas Women’s University-Denton Campus

The college of nursing at Denton campus of Texas Women’s University offers post-licensure nursing program and the lower division pre-nursing program. The pre-nursing program is designed for students seeking initial licensure as registered nurse and would want to transfer to Dallas or Houston Centers. The Denton center offers lower division courses for the freshman and sophomore years. Upon completion of the pre-nursing courses, students may apply for transfer to either of the campuses above. To apply for the bachelor of nursing major, students require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on all courses taken in addition to taking the TEAS V test. There are two admission cycles for the major in fall and spring semesters. 

Texas Women’s University-Houston

The Bachelor of Science in nursing at Houston Center of TWU is located in the famous Texas Medical Center. The track is a 4-year option designed for non-licensed students seeking initial registered nurse licensure. The track is structured in a way that students start with lower division courses at the University’s Denton campus before transferring to Houston Center to take the junior and senior year professional nursing courses.  Upon satisfactory completion of freshman and sophomore courses at Denton, students are welcome to apply for transfer to Houston Center. Applicants who have taken the TEAS V test and completed the lower division courses with minimum cumulative GPA’s of 3.0 are the most preferred candidates. There are two application dates for fall and spring semesters. TWU Houston runs the Beta Beta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing.

The University of Texas- Arlington

For students seeking initial licensure as registered nurses, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at UT-Arlington is a perfect choice. The program is offered on campus and online; a very uncommon option for 4-year licensure BSNs. The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education to prepare students for their first NCLEX-RN exam. In the freshman year, students are introduced to the concept of professional nursing and complete prerequisite and required foundational course by the end of sophomore level. Acceptance to the 4 –semester upper division nursing courses is competitive and calls for students who have high science and prerequisite GPAs. 120 applicants are chosen from the large pool of applicants each Fall and Spring semester to join the BSN as on-campus students. Upon admission into the nursing major, clinical courses must be taken in a sequential manner up to completion.

The University of Texas-Austin

The bachelor of nursing applications at UT-Austin is open throughout the year for fall and spring admissions. The 4-year full time track has two application processes. First, students must seek admission as freshmen and declare the Pre-nursing Code in order to be eligible to take the pre-nursing courses. Formal admission to the nursing major occurs after completion of pre-nursing courses usually at junior level.  Even though the university accepts transfer students, the university has set aside mandatory credits that must be completed at Austin in order to gain eligibility to apply for the major. These credits cannot be transferred from another institution whatsoever. Applicants for the major must have earned a GPA of 2.75 or higher to be eligible to apply. Volunteer or former working experience in a health care setting is a plus and is required during nursing major selection. In the scholarship category, UT Austin offers the opportunities to join the Army ROTC program among other nursing specific scholarships. The university also runs a Nursing Honors Program for exceptionally bright students.

The University of Texas-El Paso

UTEP offers a traditional Bachelor of Science in nursing degree designed for students seeking entry-level registered nurses positions. This traditional track is one of the 3 undergraduate nursing options including the Fast-track and the RN to BSN options. The traditional track starts with a pre-nursing program of general education and prerequisites courses.  It’s only after completion of the pre-nursing phase that students are allowed to apply for either fall or spring start dates. Admission to the school of nursing is very competitive owing to the limited number of seats available. To compete favorably among the pool of applicants, applicants must have taken the TEAS V test and obtained a score of 58.7 % and a Math/Science GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The University of Texas-Tyler

The generic bachelor of nursing at UT –Tyler is one of the 5 undergraduate nursing programs offered at the university alongside the LVN/RN to BSN completion and the accelerated tracks. Additionally, the university has dual degree partnerships with Jarvis Christian College to enable students graduate with a BSN and a Bachelor of Science degree and with Letourneau University to offer the Dual BSN-Bachelor of Arts/Science in Health Sciences. Special course sequences are required for each dual program above and student can check the particular details at the respective university.  The standalone generic BSN track is offered at 3 campus locations; Longview, Tyler and Palestine campuses and prepares students for initial licensure. The 4-year track is structured in to 2 years of pre-nursing courses and 2 years of professional nursing courses.  Upon completion of the first years with a minimum GPA of 2.75, students can apply for admission in the major. The major is available in both part time and full time options of 5/6 and 4 semesters respectively. New students are admitted every fall and spring semesters.

The University of Texas Health Science Center- San Antonio

The Bachelor of nursing track at UTHSCSA is an upper division completion track designed for students who have completed at least 60 semester hours in general education and prerequisite courses. This track replaced what was previously offered onsite as a generic track. Applicants eyeing the major must have completed their freshman and sophomore years from an accredited institution before applying for admission at UTHSCSA. Upon admission, either in fall or spring semester, the upper division professional nursing courses take 4 semesters with summers off to complete on a full time basis. However, for wiling students, there is a part time option of completing the program. Graduates become academically prepared to take the NLCE-RN exam to be become registered nurses.

The University of Texas-Medical Center at Galveston

UTMB undergraduate nursing degree is an upper division completion track designed for non-licensed students. As such, applicants are expected to have completed at least 40 semester hours of lower division coursework before applying to the medical branch. As a medical branch, the Galveston center exclusively offers nursing courses only designed for junior and senior level students. Of the minimum courses required for eligibility to apply for the major, students must have obtained a min cumulative GPA of 2.75. If admitted, students take nursing courses in a hybrid format that includes online, onsite and in clinical sites. A total of 4 full time semesters is required to complete the track students become eligible to write the NLCEX-RN exam. Besides the regular curriculum, the medical branch runs a baccalaureate in nursing Honors program designed for academically endowed and ambitious students. There are also the Texas Nurse Association and the Alpha Delta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International which form part of the extracurricular activities for the nursing students.

The University of Texas-Pan American

The Bachelor of Science in nursing degree program at UT-Pan American is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The BSN is a generic 4 –year track designed to prepare students to apply and take the NLCEX-RN exam for initial licensure as registered nurses. The program requires completion of prerequisites courses before applying to take the nursing major. At the end of sophomore level, students are expected to have completed their prerequisite curriculum and obtained an average GPA of 2.5 or higher to be eligible applicants for the upper division BSN major. The Pi Omicron chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International honor Society for Nursing and the students Nurses Association are some of the student organizations that nurse students can join.

University of Mary Hardin-Baylor

Every fall and spring semesters, the University of Hardin-Baylor admits about 120 students to join the pre-licensure undergraduate nursing program.  Joining the nursing program is a 2 step-affair which involves general admission as a nursing major to the university followed by application admission to the college of nursing. First, students secure admission to the university to complete a set of prerequisite courses required for the bachelor of nursing degree. Upon completion with this; usually in the first 2 years of college, with a GPA of 3.0, the student’s application to the major can be reviewed.  When in the nursing major, students can take part in nurse-nurturing activities in the Nurse Christian Fellowship, the Student Nurses Association or the Tau Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.

University of the Incarnate Word

The generic nursing degree at Incarnate Word is designed for both Direct Admission high school graduates and Regular admission students who have completed a given number of prerequisite courses.  Direct admission students are exempted from a competitive admission process usually applicable at junior level before starting the clinical nursing courses. To qualify for direct admission, students need to have obtained a cumulative HS GPA of 3.5 in addition to an ACT or SAT score of 24 and 1100 respectively. Such students must also maintain a GPA of 3.0 on all lower division courses to enable smooth transition to the major. On the other hand, regular admission students must have completed the prerequisite courses with a GPA of 2.5 or better in addition to a HESI A2 Exam score of 75 or higher. Regular admission students who meet the above requirements are not guaranteed admission to the major and are subjected to competitive admission process. Graduates become eligible to take the NLCEX-RN exam for initial licensure as registered nurses.

Wayland Baptist University

Wayland University’s Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) is an upper division track designed for students who have already completed the required 74 semester hours of general education coursework. As a Christian University, the nursing program is offered through a holistic approach that depicts nursing as service to God and Humankind.  Applicants interested in the major must have obtained a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the above courses to be eligible to apply. Upon admission, students are able to complete the requirements of the BSN in 2 years and become eligible to graduate and take the Registered Nurses NLCEX-RN exam for initial licensure.

The basic Bachelor of Science (BS) in nursing is one of the three undergraduate nursing programs offered at WTAMU alongside the Registered and Licensed Vocational Nurse BSN completion tracks. The basic BS in nursing is designed for both transfer and generic WTAMU students seeking to gain eligibility of the NLCEX-RN exam for initial licensure as a registered nurses. Applicants must have formal admission to the university and completed a lower division general education curriculum with an average GPA of 2.8 or higher. Admission to the nursing major is very competitive implying that meeting the minimum requirements does guarantee acceptance to the department on nursing.  Students can apply for start on BSN courses in fall or spring semesters.
