Broward College Nursing Program Review

Broward College (BC) was founded in 1960 as a junior/community college. In 2008, the college changed its name from Broward Community College (BCC) to Broward College to reflect its ability to now award bachelor’s degrees. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school has over 50,000 students in its associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs.

Review of Broward College Nursing Degree Programs

The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) approves the nursing program at Broward College and programs are approved by the Florida Board of Nursing.

Broward College Undergraduate Nursing Programs

All prospective students to the Broward College Nursing program must submit test scores for the Evolve Reach Admission Tests (A2). Although the college does not require a particular score, tests scores will be evaluated as part of the program. A GPA of 2.5 is required in certain cases to gain acceptance to the nursing program. Online and classroom based options are offered for both the LPN to RN transition program and the associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) program.

Nursing Associate’s Degree (ADN) Program

Generic ADN Program Option

Students with no prior nursing experience may enter Broward College’s associate’s degree level program to become a registered nurse (RN). Prospective students must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher and prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. Students will earn the certifications necessary to work as an entry level nurse in a variety of healthcare settings. The program requires approximately 1008 clinical hours. Upon completion of the program, students are awarded an ADN.

LPN to RN (Licensed Practical Nurse to Registered Nurse) Transition Program

Students who hold a Licensed Practical Nurse license within the state of Florida are eligible to complete the LPN to RN option of the Broward College ADN program. The program requires approximately 728 clinical hours.

Both courses are offered online or in person, with the online option requiring students to attend on campus-meetings, labs and examinations in person. The courses can be completed in 2 years or less, depending on which prerequisites must be completed. An ADN is awarded upon completion of the program.

Nursing RN to BSN Program

The RN-BSN program at Broward College builds upon the ADN program and trains nurses as a provider and coordinator of care, taking on an increased level of responsibility than that of an entry level nurse. Students must earn a total of 120 credits to graduate with a BSN.

Admission requirements include holding an associate’s degree in nursing, unencumbered nursing license and earning a 2.5 GPA or above in previous coursework. The BSN program can be completed in approximately 2 years provided all pre-requisites have been met. A BSN is awarded upon completion of the program.
