Daytona State College Nursing Program Review

Daytona State College (DSC) formerly known as Daytona Beach Community College opened its doors in 1957 as Florida’s first comprehensive community college. The college awarded its first bachelor’s degree in 2006, and subsequently changed its name to reflect the change in focus of academic programs. The Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredits Daytona State College to award associates and bachelors degrees.

Daytona State College Undergraduate Nursing Programs

Nursing Associate Degree (ADN)

The ADN program prepares Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to begin their career as a Registered Nurse (RN) in a variety of health care settings. Students complete a clinical practicum at a local healthcare facility including community agencies, hospitals and long-term care facilities. Students who complete the ADN program are eligible to continue their studies for a bachelor’s degree at the University of Central Florida.

Upon completion of the program students are awarded an associates degree and take the national RN certification exam, NCLEX-RN to officially become a RN.

Nursing Transition LPN to RN (Licensed Practical Nurse to Registered Nurse) Program

Students who are currently LPNs may complete the transition LPN to RN program to obtain the certification necessary to work as a registered nurse RN. The program also is a gateway to the bachelor’s program in nursing (BSN) program at the University of Central Florida. In this program nurses will expand their skills to develop care programs for individuals, families and adults throughout their lifetime. The program can be completed in about three years, and awards an ADN.

Daytona State College Certificate Programs

Nurse and Orderly Certificate Post-Secondary Adult Vocational Certificate Program (PAVC)

The Nurse and Orderly Certificate program trains nurses to become nursing assistants in long-term care facilities, operating under the supervision of a nurse. Upon completion of the program, students receive a vocational certificate and can take the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Program (NACEP) exam. Nursing assistants are trained to identify, assess, and treat healthcare issues of patients. It is important to note that this program is not eligible for federal financial aid. The program is one semester long and is 165 hours total. Admission requirements for the program including holding an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) and BLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certificate from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC). In order to pass the course, students must earn a “C” or better grade in certain courses.

Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program

The LPN program is a vocational program requiring at least 1,350 hours. Upon completion of the program students are awarded a vocational certificate and may take the NCLEX-PN, national certification exam, to become licensed practical nurses. Practical nurses may work in a variety of healthcare facilities include hospitals, long-term care facilities and nursing homes. Upon completion, students receive a certificate and are also eligible to enroll in the transitional LPN to RN associate’s degree program offered at Daytona State College.
