Cochise College Nursing Program Review

Cochise College offers three different options for students looking to get a degree in nursing. The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Nursing degree is two programs combined into one. Students entering this program can choose to get their certificate in Practical Nursing (PN) or go the full length of the course to obtain their associate degree. This college also offers a program for students to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Associate in Applied Science (AAS) – Registered Nurse (RN)

This program is for students who want to obtain their degree in order to prepare them to take the National Certification Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). This program embraces the attitude that a career in nursing is one that requires continued learning all the time. The nursing profession is an ever evolving choice that demands that the professionals who work in the field keep learning new and different techniques to keep up with the technology and new discoveries. This program lays the foundation for the student to build upon throughout the course of their career. The program includes general education courses as well as nursing specific courses. Students who successfully complete this course will be eligible to apply to take the NCLEX-RN. Students who complete this program can then transfer to a university or four year institution in order to gain their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in the RN to BSN program.

Certificate in Practical Nursing (PN) – Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Students who want to obtain their certificate in Practical Nursing (PN) can apply to begin the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) program. After the first year, students have the choice to exit the program with a certificate in PN and apply to write for the NCLEX-PN to obtain the professional title of LPN. The program produces individuals who are ready to go out into the field of nursing and embrace the ever changing career path of working in hospitals, clinics, long term care facilities, or an abundance of other medical facilities or continue their education to obtain their RN or BSN. This program prepares students to keep educating themselves through learning new and different ways to care for patients.

Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate Program – CNA

This program prepares students to take the Arizona State Certification Test in order to become a CNA. These students will be able to gain employment as a entry level nursing assistant and are generally the daily care giver to patients. This program teaches students to perform necessary functions that are vital to the daily care of the patients. CNAs are required to have a background check and fingerprinting done before they can gain employment. Classes for this program are conducted during the evening hours and students are expected to participate in lab experiences and clinical experiences.
