Shelton State Community College Nursing Program Review
Shelton State Community College was created as a result of the combination of Shelton State Technical College and the Tuscaloosa branch of Brewer State Junior College. It was merged with C.A. Fredd State Technical College in 1994. This two year college provides a wide range of areas of study for prospective students to choose where to start their education and get out into the workforce or continue their education afterward.
Shelton State Community College Nursing Program Review
Shelton State Community College offers two different two different pathways for students to choose from: Associate Degree Nursing/Practical Nursing or Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide. Under the ADN/PN program, students can choose to take the generic track to a twenty-one month ADN degree, the mobility track to get from an LPN to RN, or the 12 month PN track.
Associate Degree Nursing (ADN)/Practical Nursing (PN) Program
Tracks under this program are approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. There are three tracks available to students wanting to go into nursing at Shelton State Community College.
- Students wanting to obtain their degree in Practical Nursing (PN) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) can enter into the 12 month course that will lead to the student being educated on entry level nursing practices and will prepare them to sit for the NCLEX-PN to obtain their license.
- Students who already have a valid PN License can enter into the Mobility Track. The Mobility Track requires that the student has a background education in nursing specific courses as well as pre-requisite general education courses. After finishing the Mobility Track, students will be qualified to apply to sit for the NCLEX-RN licensure examination in order to go to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) or continue their education.
- Students coming into college wanting an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) can take the ADN track. This is five consecutive semesters of full time study that will prepare the student to sit for the NCLEX-RN licensing exam to go to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) or continue their education.
Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide
The Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide program at Shelton State Community College includes 24 credit hours of course work which prepares the prospective student to sit for the National Nurse Aide Certification Examination. Upon completion of the program and a good score on the exam, the student will be put on the Alabama Nurse Aide Registry. When the student successfully completes the second semester of courses, the will then be considered qualified to be employed in the Home Health Aide field. Students who choose to go into Nursing Assisting and Home Health Aide will be required to complete classroom instruction as well as lab and clinical experiences. The examination required to be employed as a Home Health Aide contains two different sections of written assessment and skills evaluation.in order to be certified, both parts of the test must be passed.
