University of Alabama Nursing School Review

The start of this institution came from a two-story home that was located in Birmingham, Alabama. Start-up money for this extension of the University of Alabama came from federal money in the 1930s. With the campus still located in Birmingham, the school offers a unique blend of social, cultural, as well as academic assets along with many others. This school has gained a reputation for being one of the top research facilities.

University of Alabama – Birmingham Nursing Program Review

The University of Alabama – Birmingham (UAB) offers a wide range of programs for all types of students. Whether they are striving to obtain their entry-level Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree or are ready to obtain their Ph.D., this institution covers all the bases and everything in between. With six different degree options as well as non-degree options, students can start building a career in the nursing field and keep building on it for years to come without ever leaving the Birmingham campus.

BSN – Bachelor of Science in Nursing

This program is designed for students who are just coming to the University of Alabama in Birmingham from high school or transferring from another institution. Traditional students wishing to be admitted into this program must complete the pre-nursing curriculum in order to apply to the School of Nursing. Transfer students should have taken pre-nursing courses as well as the mandatory general education classes at the institution they are transferring from before they can apply to the School of Nursing. Transfer students must also be admitted to UAB before apply. If the student is looking to enter the program through the Second Degree track, they must have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in a field of study other than nursing that took 120 credit hours to complete before being admitted.

RN to BSN Mobility

This program is offered to students who already have a valid license to practice nursing as an RN, but would like to take their education and career to the next level. Students applying for admission to this program must have a hospital diploma or an ADN. This program is officially called the RN Educational Mobility Program (RNEMP). With this program, the student has the ability to open up more career opportunities as well as opportunities to take on jobs with greater responsibility.

AMNP – Accelerated Master’s in Nursing Pathway

This program is designated for students who have achieved a bachelor’s degree in a subject other than nursing nor work in the nursing field as a registered nurse. The program is set up in two parts. The students will first complete the curriculum in order to be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN. After they have completed this curriculum and passed the licensing exam, students are then eligible to begin working as an RN while completing the required courses for their MSN degree. The master’s phase of this program can be completed in four semesters through online courses and clinical experiences. After completing this part of the program, students may take the board certification exam in order to use the MSN-qualified title.

MSN – Master of Science in Nursing

Under the Masters of Science in Nursing program, students receive training in advanced nursing techniques in order to open up new career opportunities in the nursing field and/or enter into doctoral studies. The options under this program are numerous. Students can choose from the following tracks under this program: Advanced Specialty Practice Tracks, Advanced Nursing Roles Specialty Tracks, Advanced Generalist Track, and Post-Baccalaureate or Post-MSN Certificates (generally leading to certification rather than an MSN degree).

DNP – Doctor of Nursing Practice

This program offers three different areas within the program to assist students in studying advanced clinical specialty practice, leadership, and practice inquiry. Students then use the information learned in studying these topics to obtain a leadership position to help advance the medical facilities in which they become employed and set regulations and practices that will improve patient care.

Ph.D. – Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

This program is primarily for students interested in studying the research aspect of the nursing profession to help improve nursing standards. Graduates of this program will work with other professionals to conduct research into how to best assist patients in providing health care and health care education. This program is open to those individuals who have obtained a master’s degree and also has an option for those students who have graduated with a baccalaureate degree to begin straight into this program without first getting their master’s.

Non-Degree Options

Along with their many degree options, this institution also offers several non-degree programs in which the student can obtain certification in a certain area without credit to a degree. Students can choose from Post MSN Nurse Practitioner Option, Teacher in Nursing Certificate, Clinical Research Management Option, and Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) Post-Baccalaureate.
