The University of Hawaii at Manoa offers both a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program for nurses seeking terminal degrees. To apply to either doctoral nursing program, applicants should have a minimum 3.0 GPA and a masters degree.

Both the DNP and PhD in Nursing degrees are rigorous, but differ in the length of study required. The DNP requires 2 years and 30 credits to complete, while the PhD in Nursing requires 45 credits and 4 years to complete. Both doctoral programs require nurses to enroll in courses over the summer. Courses in the nursing doctoral program Nursing doctorate programs at UHM are drafted according to standards set by the AACN (American Association of Colleges of Nursing).

The DNP and PhD in nursing are different in academic focus, providing terminal degree options both for nurses who would like to remain in practice or work at the policy level. The DNP is ideal for nurses who seek to create and implement systems of care based on an evidence-based practice model. The DNP requires students to complete a final project related to their area of study.

Nurses in the PhD in Nursing program will complete a research-based assignment under the direction of a faculty member. The doctoral research program prepares nurses for careers in academia or other research-oriented environments.
