ADN Programs in Illinois

Why Consider a Career in Nursing in Illinois?
Nursing is a highly respected profession.  A nurse provides hands-on, front-line care to patients and is a critical health care provider.  Unfortunately, one of the most chronic shortages in health care is in the field of nursing.

The number of people who are older than 65 will grow by almost 80% through the year 2030.  This number is significant because most people in that age group have one or more health conditions that need to be addressed on a regular basis.  The Affordable Care Act will aggravate that shortage by providing insurance coverage to millions of individuals currently without insurance.

What is an ADN program in Illinois?

An Illinois Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program is a two to three year program usually offered at an Illinois community or junior college designed to provide you with the foundation which you need in order to become a registered nurse in Illinois, including the foundations needed to pass the Illinois licensing exam.  An Illinois ADN program will provide you with the solid background in the health sciences, biology and particularly nursing that you will need in order to be successful in your chosen field in Illinois.  In order for you to qualify as a registered nurse in Illinois with your ADN degree, you need to be sure that the ADN program you are considering is accredited in Illinois, and you will need to pass a licensing examination after you graduate.  Once you have done so, and obtained your license from the Illinois State Board of Nursing, you will be eligible to practice as an RN anywhere in the state, from Chicago to Springfield to East St. Louis, and the more rural areas also.

What are Some Specialties an ADN RN can practice in Illinois?

An ADN RN license in Illinois enables a nurse to work in a broad variety of settings.  Just some of these specialties include ambulatory care nurses (nurses who treat patients either in physician’s offices or clinics), critical care nurses, emergency/trauma nurses and home health nurses.

What are my employment prospects as an RN in Illinois?

The employment prospects for RN’s in Illinois are excellent.  Overall, registered nurses are anticipated to lead in the second largest number of new jobs among all occupations, not just health care occupations.  In addition, as the nursing shortage increases with the aging of the baby boomer generation and the implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act, employers who are already having difficulty in retaining and attracting registered nurses will be under pressure to provide even stronger incentive packages for this profession.
