ADN Programs in Kentucky

How do I become a registered nurse in Kentucky?
There are three paths to becoming a registered nurse in Kentucky:  by endorsement, by application or by reinstatement.  Obtaining your Registered Nurse (RN) license by endorsement can only work if you are already licensed in another state.

Similarly, having your license reinstated only occurs if you have previously been licensed as an RN in Kentucky.  To learn more about the requirements for obtaining a Kentucky RN license either by endorsement or reinstatement, contact the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

What if I don’t already have a Kentucky nursing license?

In Kentucky, if you wish to become a registered nurse, you are required to graduate from a state approved nursing education program, and to pass the licensing exam.  Once you have accomplished both of these steps, and your application has been approved, then you will be issued your registered nursing license.

Can I Become a Registered Nurse in Kentucky with an ADN?

Yes.  There are two types of nursing education programs approved by the State of Kentucky for RN’s.  One of these types is the ADN nursing program.  An ADN (“Associate’s Degree in Nursing) program takes somewhere between two to three years to complete, after which you will be ready to take the necessary licensing exam required by the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

What can I do to succeed in my Kentucky ADN program?

Succeeding in an ADN program in Kentucky requires the same skills that success in most academic fields requires, as well as remembering your ultimate goal – to become a skilled nurse.  As you start your Kentucky ADN program, remember to stay focused on your studies; it is easy to become distracted during your first semester, especially if this is your first experience of education outside of high school.  Similarly, you need to remember to study hard for your college courses.  The level of studying normally required to succeed in high school is not necessarily enough to succeed in a Kentucky ADN program.  Remember to have a little fun, though, and take advantage of opportunities to meet other students in Kentucky both within and without your ADN program.  As you advance in the ADN program and begin to take your clinicals (a period of time when you will work as a student nurse under the direct supervision of a nursing mentor in a Kentucky healthcare facility) continue to remember to stay focused.  Just a little bit of common sense can pay off in a big way when it comes time for you to be awarded your Kentucky Associate’s Degree in Nursing.
