ADN Programs in Maryland

What is a Maryland ADN and why do I want one?
ADN is an abbreviation for an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. With an Associates Degree in Nursing from a school approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing, a candidate is eligible to apply for a nursing license in Maryland as well as to take the national licensing exam for Registered Nurses.

Maryland has 14 ADN programs on 15 Maryland community college campuses. These Maryland ADN programs generally can be completed in three years, and include course work in both general education and nursing.

Are nursing scholarships available to Maryland ADN nursing students?

Yes. Nursing scholarships for Maryland ADN students are available from the state of Maryland under the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s Workforce Shortage Assistance Grant Program (WSSAG). Scholarships in the WSSAG program are awarded to students who plan on working in Maryland in specific high demand careers or occupations upon graduation, including nursing. Not only are current high school seniors allowed to apply for WSSAG grants, so are degree-seeking AND students and others, as long as the school they are attending is accredited by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. The deadline to file for a WSSAG grant in Maryland is July 1. If you wish to apply for a WSSAG grant, it also is a good idea to prepare and file a Federal student aid form, known as a FAFSA. The Maryland Higher Education web site states that the FAFSA is not required for a WSSAG grant, but that the FAFSA form will be considered in conjunction with an applicant’s grade point average in determining the order in which WSSAG grants are handed out. For Maryland ADN programs, a WSSAG grant will pay $2000 a year if the program is being attended full-time and $1000 a year if the program is being attended part-time. The Maryland ADN WSSAG awards can be automatically renewed for up to 5 years as long as the student shows satisfactory academic progress and continues to meet the eligibility requirements.

What’s the catch to a WSSAG grant from Maryland?

WSSAG grants to ADN nursing students are paid back through a service obligation. An ADN graduate must begin to fulfill his or her service obligation within one year of graduation by working one year in Maryland in the field of nursing for every year of ADN scholarship assistance received. So, a nursing graduate of a Maryland ADN program who received a WSSAG grant for two years of school will be required to work for two years in the field of nursing in Maryland.
