Becoming a CNA or Certified Nurses Aide (Certified Nursing Assistant) is one of the quickest ways to start a career in the healthcare industry in Minnesota, and elsewhere in the US. It’s also one of the fastest growing professions in healthcare, and with more and more aging Americans moving into assisted living facilities and nursing homes, that’s likely to continue.
If you want to get started in a career in healthcare as a CNA in Minnesota, there are a few things you should know first.
Who Regulates CNA Training in Minnesota?
The Minnesota Department of Health is responsible for regulation of CNA training in Minnesota. They approve CNA training courses, and set the syllabus.
What Does the Minnesota CNA Course Entail?
At the very minimum, Minnesota Department of Health approved CNA courses will comprise of 75 hours of course material, although many offer additional training too. That 75 hours is divided into both class room studies and clinical training, and it covers a range of CNA tasks and skills, from basic nursing and CPR to infection control, medical terminology and administrative skills.
Reimbursement for CNA Training In Minnesota
If you are working for a certified nursing home or certified boarding house in Minnesota, or you have received a job offer from one, then you can receive your CNA training for free. You will need to provide your employer with receipts for your studies within 90 days of taking the course, but you will receive reimbursement for the costs.
Certified Nursing Assistants who receive an offer of employment within one year of completing their studies are also eligible for reimbursement.
Registration as a CNA In Minnesota
In order to work as a CNA in Minnesota, you need to be registered on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. In order to become registered, you need to successfully complete an approved certified nursing assistant training program, and pass the competency test.
Registration must happen within four months of completing your training and taking the competency test.
Employment Prospects and Expected Earnings for a CNA in Minnesota
A CNA in Minnesota can expect to earn a little more than the national average for CNA’s. In fact, the average salary for a certified nursing assistant in the state of Minnesota is about $26,000 per annum, although it could be more or less than that, depending on your experience, and your location.
All Certified Nurses Assistants in Minnesota must work under an RN or LPN, or another medical professional, but many also go on to study further, and become registered nurses or medical technicians themselves.
Currently, the Department of Employment and Economic Development in Minnesota estimates that there will be a 12% growth in jobs for Certified Nurses Aides in the state between now and 2016, so there are certainly plenty of jobs to be had in the field.
There’s really no quicker, easier way to get involved in the health care industry in Minnesota, or elsewhere, than to train as a CNA, and there are definitely great prospects for anyone who does.
